The Indian institute of Astrophysics is primarily devoted to research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and related physics. The main campus is in Koramangala, Bangalore and there is also a campus situated in Hoskote which is also known as CREST (Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology).
In 1786 an observatory was set up in Madras, and it began to function as the Madras Observatory. In 1899, it was moved to Kodaikanal and was given an autonomous society, called the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and its headquarters were shifted to Koramangala, Bangalore. This institute is funded by the Department of Science and Technology.

The People Associated with Indian Institute of Astrophysics
There are several big names associated with IIA. The director of IIA is Dr. P Sreekumar, and the director’s secretariat consists of K Thiyagarajan, Pramila Mohan and Maliny Rajan. Dr. K Kasturirangan is the Chairman of IIA.
