Amarja Dam, Gulbarga

Amarja Dam is located in Aland town near the city of Gulbarga in the Gulbarga district of Karnataka. The Amarja Dam is built across the river Amarja that flows through the Krishna basin in the Southern part of India. The dam was constructed in 1998. This is a multi-purpose dam. The reservoir is used to irrigate the surrounding areas, provide water supply, and solve the problem of drinking water in the area.

The dam is 960 meters long and 31.85 meters high from the foundation. It covers a catchment area of 53.095 Th ha. The design flood of the dam is 2837 cumec. The dam has an Ogee type of spillway and 5 spillway gates. The maximum water level of the dam is 461.5 meters.

Amarja Dam: Nearby tourist attractions

The Amarja Dam attracts visitors due to its calm and quite surroundings. The serene water of the dam is a beautiful sight that fascinates visitors. Amarja is considered a holy river and hence, people flock to the dam to enjoy the beauty of the holy river.

There are several tourist attractions in the areas surrounding the Amarja Dam. Travellers can explore many tourist destinations spread across the Gulbarga district while visiting the dam. Some of the famous tourist attractions of the Gulbarga distriact are:

Gulbarga Fort: The ancient fort had several mosques, buildings, stables, ammunition dumps, and temples. It attracts visitors due to its rich Islamic architectural style.

Jama Masjid: Jama Masjid was built to resemble the mosque of Cordova in Spain. It was constructed in 1367 A.D. and is famous for being one of the oldest mosques in southern India. The mosque has 68 domes.

Jevargi: Jevargi is a sacred Jain pilgrimage centre situated on the banks of river Bhima. The place holds attraction due to its exquisite architecture.

Sharana Basaveshwara Temple: The Sharana Basaveshwara Temple is an ancient structure built in the 12th century. The temple has a unique Sabhamandapa with 36 arches and many pillars.

Deval Ghanagapur: Deval Ghanagapur village is famous for the Kalleshwar temple and the confluence of rivers Amarja and Bhima. The confluence is known as Sangam and is a very popular tourist attraction.

Chandralamba Temple: Chandralamba Temple is well-known for its traditional Kerala style of architecture. The large temple complex is dotted with mini temples that enhance the beauty of the whole place.

How to reach Amarja Dam

Amarja Dam is easily accessible from Gulbarga by buses and taxis. The nearest airport to Gulbarga is the Sholapur domestic airport. The place can also be reached from Bangalore’s international airport by hiring taxi services.

There is a large station at Gulbarga, the Gulbarga railway station. Many trains ply regularly between Gulbarga and places like Pune, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolhapur, Hyderabad, etc.

Gulbarga is also well-connected by the road network. Several state-run and private buses run between Gulbarga and cities like Bangalore, Bijapur, Hubli and many other towns and cities regularly daily.
