Gruha Jyothi Scheme: How to avail the benefits if you change your house

May 15, 2025 by madur

The Gruha Jyothi scheme is one of the five guarantee schemes implemented by the Karnataka government in 2023. Under this scheme, customers are eligible for up to 200 units of power for free every month.

To avail of the Gruha Jyothi scheme benefit, house owners or renters need to link their Aadhar number with the account number of the respective ESCOM (Electricity Supply Company).

Every month, the concerned ESCOM issues a bill to every customer. However, the government pays the bill amount. If the user exceeds the stipulated quota of power, the extra units will be charged. Your energy bill can be paid through the respective ESCOM’s website.

The state government launched the Gruha Jyothi scheme in July 2023. Around 92% of the domestic users in Karnataka are now benefiting from the scheme. However, all these days, there were complaints that once a person/ family registers for the scheme, there is no option to de-link. Now, the state government has activated a de-link link, which is user-friendly.

How do you link your Aadhar for the Gruha Jyothi scheme benefits?

Here is the step-by-step guide to link your Aadhar for the Gruha Jyothi benefits.

  • Visit the Seva Sindhu website here
  • The link takes you to the online application.
  • After filling in the information, an OTP is sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Once you enter the OTP, you become eligible for the Gruha Jyothi scheme benefits.

How to de-link the Gruha Jyothi scheme?

In Karnataka, around 60% of the Gruha Jyothi beneficiaries are staying in rented houses or houses bought on a lease basis. While vacating the house, they were unable to de-link their Aadhar with the account number and get the benefit in the new house all these days. Now, the energy department launched a new link to de-link the Aadhar from one house and link it to another house.

  • This process is also carried out online. Here is a step-by-step guide to de-linking Aadhar from the Gruha Jyothi scheme.
  • Visit the Seva Sindhu website here
  • Next, click the de-linking link  here
  • Fill out the online form with your Aadhar number
  • Once you enter the Aadhar number, you will get the current status.
  • Click on the de-linking link
  • An OTP is sent to your registered mobile number
  • Once you enter the OTP, your connection is de-linked.

You can link your new house account number through the Gruha Jyothi link to get the benefit. However, the free units of power are decided based on the previous user. Under the scheme, 10% of the excess units are free.

The linking and de-linking links are activated on the websites of all state ESCOMs. An Internet connection, Aadhar number, and mobile number to receive the OTP are required for both processes.

Both these services of the Gruha Jyothi scheme can be availed of through the Seva Sindhu mobile app. The details are available here.
