One of the common questions asked by the students and their parents after the +2 is which is the best course and college to pursue higher education. Keeping this in mind and with the idea of developing world-class institutes in the country, the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) introduced the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in the year 2016.
Karnataka is the preferred destination for higher education for students from across the country. The state has highest numbers of government run medical colleges with 10% all India quota seats, a huge numbers of private universities and the technical institutes.
Adding to this, Karnataka is ranked no 1 state in the country which attracts highest number of foreign national students. So this NIRF ranking is very crucial for all the stakeholders.
What Is NIRF Ranking?
The proposal of NIRF ranking system was approved by the MHRD on September 29, 2015. This ranking system was first introduced in the year 2016.
Under this new ranking system, the institutes across the country are ranked based on various parameters. The ranking is given in over all categories beside university, engineering management general pharma, law, medical and architecture colleges.
Institutes are ranked by a core committee set up by the MHRD. The parameters are broadly categorised in to teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and Inclusivity, and perception.

Why Is NIRF National Ranking Important?
According to the experts this NIRF ranking is very important for below mentioned reasons.
For foreign national students, NIRF ranking helps to select college and course of their choice. Many times, students are duped by the agents and the college management.
But NIRF ranking ensures that henceforth it is easy for the students to select the college/ course of their choice besides understanding the quality of education imparted in these colleges/ universities.
Career: The NIRF ranking expected to influence the campus selection. As the private institutes prefer colleges of higher ranking, naturally these colleges are preferred by the private entities while shortlisting the institutes for the campus interview.
Under the NIRF ranking system only recognised institutes and courses are considered for the ranking. So it is confirmed that these colleges are recognised by various government agencies and there is no need to fear about the recognition.
This ranking will also help the top ranking students to select the best of the colleges easily. They need not worry while taking into consideration various claims made by the colleges.
