Established in the year 1963, Basaveshwar Engineering College has been a landmark institution imparting engineering education in Dharwad, Karnataka. The Basaveshwar Engineering College is affiliated to the Visveswaraiah Technological University in Belgaum, Karnataka. The All India Council for Technical Education in New Delhi approves and certifies Basaveshwar Engineering College.
The Basaveshwar Engineering College operates with a clear vision. The college and staff strive to bring recognition to the college as being a premier institution of education. The education at here is research based and aimed at a holistic development of the student including social and economic development.
The college is supported and guided by Shri Basaveshwara Vidya Vardhak Sangha, an organization founded by Shri Gurubasava Mahaswamiji of Bilur. The organization began in 1906 and has led numerous educational institutions besides Basaveshwara Engineering College.

There are national and international journals available in the library. There is also a book bank for SC/ ST students. The digital collections housed in the library are also lent out to students and staff members.
The hostel facility available at the college is truly impressive. A total of three separate hostels provide boarding and lodging for students. The administrative efforts of the college are effected through the Governing council of the college. The council has a chair person and members of the council include nominees from B. V. V. Sangha, AICTE, DTE and VTU. The Ex- Officio secretary of the council is the principal of the college.
The BEC Alumni Association proudly encloses numerous luminaries of the current times. The alumni association has branches in Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad and Pune.
