Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve, Shimoga

The Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve is a popular wildlife destination of Karnataka. It is located at a distance of about 10 km from Shimoga (also known as Shivamogga) on the Shimoga-Sagar Road. The reserve is spread across 200 hectares of land.

Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve is a place to rehabilitate the lions and tigers that are rescued from circuses across India. It is an open zoo where safaris are conducted for tourists by the forest department. The wildlife safari was started in the year 1998.

Wildlife to be seen in Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve, Shimoga

The Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve, one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka, is home to various species of wild animals. Visitors can catch glimpses of lions, tigers, leopards, sloth bear, deer and many other species of animals. One can watch a variety of rare migratory birds inside the reserve.

Attractions of Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve, Shimoga

The main attraction of the Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve are the wild animals that can be seen roaming inside the reserve. The place also has a small zoo and a well-maintained children’s park where the kids can have a nice time.

The forest department organises regular recreation and sightseeing outings for visitors. The jeep safari of the reserve is very popular among visitors.

The Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve offers some very interesting activities for wildlife enthusiasts and general visitors. Such activities include:

  • Going on a safari that allows visitors to have a look at various wild animals from close quarters
  • Watching rare species of birds that have made the reserve their habitat
  • Enjoying day outing at the site as the place is a popular picnic spot

How to reach the Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve

The Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve is a popular wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka. The place is accessible by various means of transport. The reserve lies at a distance of about 280 km from Bangalore.

By Air

The nearest airport to reach Shimoga is in Mangalore. It lies at a distance of around 165 km. Private vehicles are available to reach the wildlife reserve from the airport.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is located in Shimoga. Visitors can take trains from major cities of Karnataka to reach Shimoga. Taxis and local buses are available from the railway station to reach the wildlife reserve.

By Road

The Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve, a popular wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka is well connected by the road network. Several buses connect Shimoga to various parts of Karnataka. From Shimoga visitors can easily take a taxi to reach the wildlife reserve.

Private vehicles can also be hired by visitors to reach the reserve from nearby cities and towns.
