Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway – Why Is The Project Important?
Bengaluru and Mysuru are amongst the most important cities in Karnataka. They hold value for businesses as well as tourism. The current 4-lane highway is over congested and passes through a number of populated towns including Mandya, Maddur and Srirangapatna. Traffic jams and accidents are frequent occurrences on this highway.
The new highway will link Bengaluru and Mysuru and make it possible to travel back and forth on the same day. It will also connect Bengaluru with the Kodagu and Mangaluru regions as well as parts of Kerala. Reducing congestion, not only will it save time, but it will also reduce pollution.
Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway – Salient Features
A ten-lane highway will ease congestion and allow light and heavy vehicles to travel on independent lanes. It will be a fully access-controlled facility. The highway will also have service lanes on either side for easy movement of local traffic in inhabited areas.
In a further effort to reduce congestion, the design includes an 8-km long elevated corridor, 11 overpasses, 64 underpasses, 4 roads over bridges, 5 bypasses, 9 major bridges and 42 minor bridges. Bus stops will also be installed at 21 locations along this highway.
Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway – The Project Progress
The project was first proposed in 2014. It was started in two phases in May 2019 and December 2019 but not much progress could be made because of COVID restrictions. An earlier estimate had put the completion date is June 2022 but it is now scheduled to be completed by October 2022. The project is costing the government about Rs 8,350 crores.
