The BJP is fighting the election alone while INC and JD(S) have entered into a pre-poll alliance. The INC will field candidates from 20 seats while the remaining 8 goes to JD (S).

Sumalatha Ambareesh, contesting from Mandya as an independent candidate, after the INC refused to give her ticket, will be backed by BJP. Ambareesh, Sumalatha’s late husband, had won LS polls from Mandya representing INC both in 1999 and 2004.

This is the first time Mandya is going to an election without an INC or BJP candidate. If Sumalatha manages a victory, she will be the first independent MP from the state in 52 years.
