Yagachi Dam, Belur, Hassan

The Yagachi Dam is built across the river Yagachi, a tributary of river Kaveri. The dam is situated at a distance of 3 km from the town of Belur in Hassan district in the state of Karnataka.  The dam was constructed with the objective to harness water resource for the purpose of irrigation and to meet the demands for drinking water in Belur, Chikmagalur and Hassan districts.

The dam was constructed in the year 2001. The reservoir is situated at an altitude of 965 feet above the sea level. The length of the Yagachi dam is 1,280 meters. The maximum height above the foundation of the reservoir is 26.237 meters.

Yagachi Dam: An enticing tourist destination

The Yagachi dam is a popular tourist destination. The natural beauty of the landscape mesmerizes visitors. Tourists flock in large numbers to enjoy the beauty of the dam and the surrounding areas. The place is ideal to spend time away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The cool breeze of the dam rejuvenates the mind and the body. Just sitting near the reservoir and watching the calm water makes one feel relaxed.

As the dam is just outside the town, it can be easily reached by public transport. This factor has also acted as a contributing aspect in the dam’s popularity among the tourists and the locals alike.

The Yagachi dam has a number of tourist attractions surrounding it. Some of the famous places of attraction situated near the dam are as follows:

Chennakesava Temple: The Chennakesava Temple is situated on the banks of the Yagachi River. This is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Hoysaleshwara Temple: The ancient Hoysaleshwara Temple is dedicated to the king and queen of the Haysala Empire, Hoysaelshwara and his wife Shantaleshwara. The temple contains 240 images of various Gods and Goddesses and is a highly popular tourist destination.

Mullayanagiri: Mullayanagiri is the highest peak of Karnataka. The peak is a popular trek among the adventure lovers. The scenic beauty of the trek attracts visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature in an adventurous manner.

Hebbe Falls: The Hebbe falls are of a height of 551 feet. Situated inside a coffee plantation, this water fall is abundant with natural beauty. Locals are of the opinion that the water of this waterfall has medicinal properties.

Rock Garden: The rock garden is a beautiful place that is frequented by visitors every day. The place has a lot of flower beds in various colors. The rock-cut garden also has a large number of botanically significant plants growing inside it that are a pleasure to watch.

Z point: Z point is a popular trekking point. It offers splendid view of the sunset in the evenings. The high altitude of the Z point offers a great view of the grasslands and forests below. There is also a waterfall named Shanti on the trek route to Z point that makes the trek an interesting matter.

Kalathgiri Falls: The Kalathgiri Falls is situated on a hilltop from where the view of the surrounding area is mesmerizing. Visitors can enjoy trekking to the falls through a beautiful forest area. There is a small temple near the falls that attracts tourists.

How to reach Yagachi Dam

Yagachi Dam is a major tourist attraction of the temple town of Belur. The town is well connected to other towns and cities of Karnataka and can be easily reached by road.

By Air

The nearest international airport is Mangalore airport that is located at a distance of 168 km from Belur.

By Rail

Belur does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest railway station is at Hassan, located at a distance of 40 km from Belur. The station at Hassan serves trains that connect it to major junctions such as Mysore, Mangalore and Bangalore.

By Road

Belur has regular bus services that connect the town to several important cities of Karnataka. There are frequent bus services that connect Belur to Bangalore, Mangalore, Hassan, Shimoga, Mysore, Chikmagalur, Belgaum, Dharmastala, Halibeedu, etc. Taxis can also be hired from Hassan to reach Belur.
