Home Care For The Elderly In Bangalore

May 25, 2019 by madur

  • The shift from joint to nuclear families has left the elderly without a familial support system
  • Home caregiving preferred to old age homes
  • Finding good nurses is the biggest challenge for home caregiving agencies

Today, most people live in nuclear family set ups. This means that when an elderly member of the family falls ill, there may not be someone from the family nearby to take care of them. This is where home care for the elderly in Bangalore is coming to the rescue.

Why Home Care For The Elderly?

Hospitalization may not always be needed especially in cases of lifestyle ailments and degenerative conditions like dementia or Parkinson’s Instead; most families depend on home caregivers.  In this article, we discuss the need and challenges of home care for the elderly in Bangalore and across the country.

The rising demand for home caregivers has made many hospitals and diagnostic chains expand their services to include these services. A number of healthcare startups also focus on recruiting trained nurses, technicians and other health caregivers for such situations.

Growing Need For Healthcare For The Elderly

Along with the shift in society towards nuclear families, there has also been a shift in society’s demographics. According to a report by the United Nations Population Fund, in 2050, about 19% of India’s population will be over the age of 60 years. In comparison, people over the age of 60 years comprised only 8% of the population in 2015.

Living without their family has also contributed to the loneliness and isolation experienced by the elderly. This has been linked to growing prominence of degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

In addition, the cities we live in have high pollution levels that make cardiovascular diseases more common. With their reduced immunity, the elderly are at the highest risk for such issues.

Age Homes Vs Home Care

In India, putting one’s parents in an old age home is looked upon as deserting one’s parents. This social view is one of the many reasons why children prefer to pay for home care rather than put elderly dependents in an old age home.

Another reason is that most old age homes offer only basic services and maintain poor living conditions for the people living there. On the other hand, home care services are more professional and offer personalized services. They are also better equipped to deal with complex medical conditions.

Challenges For Home Caregiving Companies

Finding trained personnel willing to take up the position is proving to be a bigger challenge than companies specializing in home care anticipated. Attrition rates are high among nurses who typically prefer to work in hospitals.

This helps them gain experience that will be valuable when they apply to work abroad. Nurses are also wary of working with these companies as they typically offer lower pay as compared to hospitals and do not offer the same opportunities for career growth.

Lack of accredited training institutions is also adding to the problem.

The companies also take on risks related to personal safety and medical issues. Non-medical caregivers have the highest such risk especially in the event of a medical emergency.
