November 28, 2011 by madur

Angling in Coorg has taken precedence and you can drop a line in the hope of catching some fish in one of the most scenic and lush towns in Karnataka, Coorg a.k.a. Kodagu.

An Overview of the Coorg Region

Coorg, better known as Kodagu with the locals, is a lush and green hill station and possibly one of the most visited tourist spots located in the southern state of Karnataka in India. Boasting of humble climate, exclusive culture and lip-smacking cuisine, Coorg is a must-see place on every traveler’s list not only in India but across the world as well.

Blessed with scenic water-falls and several spots of grasslands, it is hailed as a haven for nature and adventure sports lovers. Being a neighbor to bustling and cosmopolitan Bangalore City, Coorg is an ideal weekend getaway for the entire family. Dotted with many an opportunity for every individual, Coorg takes a special place for its famous adventure tourism and is also hailed as the finest spots to practice the sport of Angling.

Angling Opportunities in Coorg

India boasts of some of the longest coastlines in world and has one of the most water-bodies than any other countries. Being a country that has strong traditions and culture, water-bodies are revered and one of them located in Karnataka is the river Cauvery, which originates from the Brahmagiri Hill in the Western Ghats in Coorg district.

Anglers and fishing enthusiasts can throw in their line from the banks of the river in the hope to hook species like Ladyfish and Mahaseer. One such famous fishing spots is the Valnur Fishing Camp nestled near Kushalnagar on the banks of the river Cauvery.

Proper permission and fishing licenses are to be obtained by the anglers from the Coorg Wildlife Society. The licenses clearly spell out the particular stretch of the river that can be used for angling. They also specify the exact numbers of fish that can be caught per day and state that the fishes hooked are to be released back into the water. Licenses are usually not issued during the monsoon season as that is time when the fish breed.

Failure to obtain appropriate licenses by anglers can land them in trouble as they may be penalized by government authorities. Therefore, it is a must to visit the designated official before proceeding to hook a catch. The camp is also home to several species and varieties of birds, hence satisfying the tastes and passions of bird-lovers.

Angling is a sport that requires a lot of patience as you’ll need to sit for long in the same spot, but here in Coorg you can be assured that you hook a catch as the birds chirp away in delight amidst the pleasant noise of the Cauvery.

How to Get to the Fishing Camp in Coorg
