With recorded forest area of around 38,720 square kilometers, Karnataka enjoys a rich and diverse wildlife. This Indian state has a number of wildlife sanctuaries across its length and breadth for preserving its fauna. The 539.58 Square Km, Biligiriranga Swamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary is habitat for a variety of mammals like elephants, tigers, sloth bears, gaur, barking deer and sambar. Situated between Chikmagalur and Shimoga, the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is a tiger reserve and also has a leopard population. Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttara Kannada district is home to Malabar giant squirrel, elephant and wild boar.
Karnataka also has sanctuaries for birds such as the Ranibennur Blackbuck Sanctuary and Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary. Mainly a blackbuck conserves, Ranibennur Blackbuck Sanctuary is also a habitat for endangered great Indian Bustard.
