The Savehaklu Reservoir – A Hidden Gem in Shivamogga

The Savehaklu reservoir may not be one of the most well-known water reservoirs in Karnataka but it is a beautiful spot. Built on the Chakra River in the Shivamogga district, this reservoir offers spellbinding views. It has been a shooting site for many movies.

What Makes Savehaklu Reservoir Special?

The Savehakla reservoir is filled by the Chakra dam. Constructed back in 1980, this earthen dam stands 53m tall and also feeds the Linganamakki dam. It is a major source of water storage for the region.

Apart from the beauty of the water, the reservoir is also celebrated for the forested hills surrounding it. The reservoir looks spectacular during the monsoons with foggy clouds drifting over the surface.

There are many Insta-worthy spots here. You can take selfies by the side of the reservoir, on the bridge or on the steps leading down to the water.

If you’re a nature lover, there are many spots near the Savehaklu reservoir worth exploring.

Anejhari Butterfly Camp

The Anejhari Butterfly Camp has a beautiful trail where you can see a variety of butterflies in their natural habitat. This includes the Paris Peacock, the Tail Lacewing, the Malabar Tree Nymph and the Red Helen. The camp also has a kid’s play area.

Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary

This protected wildlife sanctuary is known for its tropical evergreen forests and thriving animal population. If you’re lucky, you can spot tigers, leopards, sloth bears, jackals, lion-tailed macaque, peafowls, langurs, and a variety of birds.

Kavaledurga Fort

The Kavaledurga Fort is about 40 minutes away from the reservoir. Dating back to the 9th century, this fort stands on a tall peak overlooking the Mani reservoir and a small temple. It has an impressive structure with the remains of a palace, guard rooms, bath and storage rooms.

Talasi Abbi Falls

The Talasi Abbi Falls is just about half an hour away from the reservoir. It’s a remote waterfall where you can bask in the serene beauty of nature and enjoy a family picnic. You can jump into the pool at the bottom of this waterfall too. Be careful though, the rocks down to the waterfall can be a little slippery.

How To Reach The Savehaklu Reservoir

By Air

The airport at Shivamogga is the closest airport to the Savehaklu reservoir. The 100km distance from the airport to the reservoir can be completed in a little over 2 hours.

By Rail

The Shimoga railway station at a distance of 95km is the closest railhead to the Savehaklu reservoir. You can complete the journey from the railway station to the reservoir by cab or local buses.

By Road

Savehaklu reservoir is connected by road to all the nearby towns and cities in the district.
