Shimoga

Located in the central part of Karnataka, Shimoga city is the district headquarters of the Shimoga district. It has been renamed officially as Shivamogga, meaning Shiva-Mukha or “Face of Shiva”. Throughout the different eras, Shimoga has been ruled by various dynasties such as Chalukyas, Kadambas, Gangas, and Hoysals. Stretched right beside the Tunga River, Shimoga is known as the gateway to the Western Ghats and called “Gateway of Malnad” by the locals.

Vast paddy fields and several waterfalls enrich the landscape in and around this city. This city has done remarkably well in terms of industrial growth. Thriving industries of this city include Pearlite Industries, Malnad Alloys, and Perfect Alloys. Shimoga also delights visitors with plenty of visiting worthy places such as Shivappa Nayaka’s Palace, Gajanur Dam, Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary, Harakere Shiva Statue and Koodli. Travelers can also visit Sakkare Bayalu, an elephant training camp lying 2 km away from Gajanur Dam. Read more about Shimoga
