Chandramouleshwara temple, Hosanagara, Shimoga of the Ramachandrapura Mutt, is a unique architectural wonder of modern times. Located in Hosanagara of Shimoga district, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and draws the pious and tourists alike. Srimajjagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Raghaveshwara Bharathi Mahaswamiji is instrumental in building the Chandramouleshwara temple at Hosanagara, Shimoga.

Chandramouleshwara temple, Hosanagara, Shimoga architecture

The Chandramouleshwara temple is built according to the Agama Vastu Shastra. The temple is constructed out of rock without modern materials like cement. Mahesh Muniyangala, the Vastu expert, guided the building of the temple with the able hands of the sculptors of Murudeshwara. This marvel in stone also boasts wooden and copper coating. The wooden carvings in the temple are worth mentioning and are the excellent work of the Vishwakarmas of Karkala. Furthermore, the temple, constructed according to the Dravidian Gajaprishta architectural style, resembles the back of an elephant, as seen from above. They have also incorporated the elements of Hoysala and Kerala architecture.

The Chandramouleshwara temple, Hosanagara is a marvelous structure in the middle of a pond that is artificially created from the nearby River Sharavati. Built on the banks of the River Sharavati, the temple is a peaceful abode. The best time to visit the Chandramouleshwara temple is in the early morning or in the evening. The presiding deity is Lord Chandramouleshwara or Lord Shiva. There is also a shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha. 

How to reach

The Chandramouleshwara temple in the Hosanagara town is 66 KM from the city of Shimoga. You can take a bus from Shimoga to Hosanagara. You could also hire a taxi from Shimoga to Hosanagara to visit the temple.

Where to stay?

Since Hosanagara is a small town, there may be few places to stay. The best option is to stay in Shimoga and travel to Hosanagara to visit the Chandramouleshwara temple.
