Overview of Schools In Karnataka

Karnataka, renowned for its rich culture, is the address to some of the finest schools in the country. The state has witnessed an increase in the literacy rate in the last decade, climbing from a mere 66.64 per cent to an impressive 75.60 per cent. This has been possible due to the improvement in the primary education sector of the state.

The schools in the Karnataka can be divided into three categories based on their affiliation:

  • Karnataka State Board
  • Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE Board)
  • Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ICSE Board)

Number of Schools in Karnataka

Karnataka has several schools that provide basic education at the primary and secondary levels. The total number of schools available in the state is as follows:

  • Pre-Primary Schools- 4,597
  • Primary Schools:- 23,690
  • Elementary Schools- 24, 142
  • Secondary Schools- 8, 216
  • Senior Secondary Schools- 1,497

Medium of Instruction in the Schools of Karnataka

Medium of instruction followed are Kannada and English for the schools affiliated under the state board. Generally English is used as a medium of teaching in the  schools affiliated under CBSE and ICSE.

Schools in Mysore

Mysore, ranked as the second largest city in Karnataka, houses a number of schools. The first modern school was established in Mysore in  the year of 1833. There are vernacular medium as well as English medium school in the city. Most of these schools are equipped with good libraries and computer labs. The schools are affiliated to CBSE, ICSE or to the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board.

Schools in Mangalore

Mangalore city is one of the most important educational centres in India. The schools in the city come under the administration of the department headed by Commissioner of Public Instruction. The schools in Mangalore are affiliated to any of the following boards:

  • Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board
  • Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi (ICSE)
  • Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi (CBSE)

The following are a few famous schools in Mangalore:

  • Sacred Heart High School
  • Sacred Heart High School
  • Holy Angels Higher Primary School
  • St Lawrence Higher Primary School
  • Besant National Girls High School

Schools in Bangalore

Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, boasts of some of the finest schools in the state. With a number of foreigners living in Bangalore, the city houses a few international schools as well. These schools follow IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) syllabus. Bangalore city also has schools affiliated to ICSE, CBSE and to State Board.

  • Valley School
  • Cambridge International School
  • Jain Heritage School

Karnataka PUC board is being phased out in Karnataka. 2013 will see the last batch of PUC. It is being replaced by CBSE syllabus all over Karnataka.
