Godachinamalki Falls, Belgaum – The Cascading Beauty

Godachinamalki Falls is a splendid waterfall situated in a lush green valley of Karnataka. The waterfall is located in the Belgaum district of the state, near the village of Godachinamalki that stands at a distance of about 15 km from Gokak town and 40 km from Belgaum town. The waterfall has a height of about 50 feet.

The incredibly beautiful waterfall is formed by the river Markhandeya. As such, the waterfall is also known as Markandeya Falls.

The charm of Godachinamalki Falls, Belgaum

The charm of Godachinamalki Falls is due to the fact that the waterfall is a cascading one and so, the drop is not sudden. The water descends through several steps before it takes the final plunge to fall into the valley. The mist formed by the falling water and the scenic beauty of the place is simply breath-taking. The waterfall and the surrounding landscape present a panoramic view that attracts visitors to just stand near it and enjoy the magic of nature.

It is a perfect spot for enjoying a day out with friends and family. That is why it is a popular picnic spot.

Trekking to Godachinamalki Falls, Belgaum

The best part about visiting the waterfall is that it can be approached by a number of routes. The waterfall is approachable by vehicles through more than one route. However, for the more adventurous visitors, the waterfall can be reached by trekking from the Godachinamalki village.

The trek route passes through a forest having an irregular route for reaching the waterfall. It is a trek of about 2 km that takes one to the green valley containing the cascading waterfall. For those who cannot walk much this waterfall is the ideal destination.

The waterfall can be reached by cars or vehicles till a certain spot that is very near to the site (about 1 km). From that particular spot visitors can take a short walk to the lovely waterfall.

Best time to visit Godachinamalki Falls

The best time to visit the Godachinamalki Falls, Belgaum, is during the months of June to September. The weather during this period is ideal for visiting the waterfalls. Due to the rains the volume of water in the Godachinamalki Falls increases and makes the sight more amazing for the visitors. The greenery surrounding the falls takes on a new look and the scenic beauty of the whole area enhances.

Attractions near Godachinamalki Falls, Belgaum

There are several tourist attractions situated in Belgaum that can be visited while on a trip to the waterfall. Some of the tourist attractions of Belgaum are:

  • Belgaum Fort: The Belgaum Fort is an ancient monument that dates back to the 13th century AD. It is one of the oldest forts in Karnataka. The fort is in a ruined condition. However, the place is worth visiting due to its historical significance.
  • Kittur Fort and Palace: This is a historical monument that is associated with the brave queen Chennamma and her armed rebellion against the British forces that took place much before the uprising of 1857. The ruined fort and palace are examples of fine planning and architecture of that era.
  • Gokak Falls: The Gokak Falls is located at a short distance away from the Godachinamalki Falls. The waterfall has a height of 170 feet. The waterfall is shaped like a horse shoe at the crest. The waterfall becomes a wonderful sight during the monsoon season.
  • St. Mary’s Church: It is a magnificent church that is widely renowned for its architecture. The church was built in the year 1869. The gothic stone structure of the church attracts a large number of tourists.
  • Kapileshwara Temple: It is one of the oldest temples in Belgaum. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Shiva. The idol of Shiva or Shivalinga that exists inside the temple is believed to have self-originated and hence, it is known as “Swambhuvu “in the native language. The temple is believed to have been built in the 12th century.

How to reach the Godachinamalki Falls

The Godachinamalki Falls can be easily accessed as the road connectivity to the village of Godachinamalki is pretty good.

By Air

The nearest airport to reach the waterfall is located at Bangalore. The Bangalore International Airport connects to several cities and towns within the country and to several other nations of the world. From the airport one can hire a cab to reach the waterfall.

By Rail

The railway station located nearest to the waterfall is the Belgaum Railway Station. It has trains that connect it to several other towns and cities of the state and beyond. There are buses, cabs and taxis that can be accessed for reaching the waterfall from Belgaum. The Pacchapur Railway Station is another station from where the falls can be easily reached.

By Road

There are frequent buses that connect Bangalore to the Godachinamalki village. From the village it is a 3 km trek that passes through a picturesque forest area before reaching the waterfall. Private vehicles and hired cabs can go to another 2 km towards the waterfall. However, the last part of the falls has to be reached on foot.
