  1. Chitradurga

Chitradurga is best-known for the stone fortress or the Chitradurga fort. The history of this city dates back to the stone age and is associated with a number of ancient myths.

The fort is seemingly impregnable with 38 posterior entrances, 19 gateways and 4 secret entrances. Within it are beautiful palaces, a mosque, oil pits, granaries and water tanks. The Chandravalli caves are another key attraction. It is one of the mush sought after weekend getaways from Bangalore

2. Belur, Halebid and Shravanabelagola

3. Chikmagalur

If you’re looking for a quiet getaway, drive down to Chikmagalur. This hill station is famed for its coffee plantations and lush green hillside. The cool weather adds to the city’s allure making it a great place to get away from the chaos of city life.

4. Coorg

With it’s misty, green landscape, Coorg is a popular destination for nature-lovers.  The green hills are punctuated by gurgling streams and aromatic spice and coffee plantations. Some of the key attractions in Coorg are the Abbey falls, the Golden Temple, the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary and the Raja’s seat.

5. Hampi

Set by the banks of the Tungabhadra River, Hampi has been classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The city was founded by Harihara and Bukka and flourished under the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire.

There are a number of historical monuments, temples and museums that are reminiscent of the glorious eras gone by. The most famous of these are the Sacred center, the Royal center, the royal stables, pavilions, baths and palaces.

6. Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal

Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal developed as centers of experimentation for temple building under royal patronage. The Chalukyas built over 150 temples within a 48km radius in the region. Badami is also known for its ancient rock-cut cave temples.

Located amidst forests and tall cliffs, the village of Yana is best known for karst rock formations. It is considered one of the wettest villages in the world and the cleanest village in Karnataka.

The Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and the Mohini Shikhara are the most well-known rock formations in the village. A temple dedicated to Shiva at the foot of these rock formations also makes it a  pilgrimage destination.

8. Gokarna

Gokarna is known for it’s Shiva temples and its pristine, sandy beaches. The Gokarna temple is believed to house the original image of Lord Shiva’s linga.

According to local legends, Shiva gave the Atma linga to Ravana as a boon. When Ravana’s powers began to grow too strong, Lord Ganapati was instructed to take the linga and install it on earth. There are a number of other small temples in the vicinity as well.

9. Gulbarga

Gulbarga has a rich history and is home to a number of architectural marvels like the Hafth Gumbad, the Shor Gumbad, Jama Masjid and the Gulbarga Fort.

The city’s history dates back to the 6th century. Adorned with intricate calligraphy, floral and geometric designs, the tomb of Sufi saint Syed Shah Qhabulullah Husayni is one of the key attractions of the area.
