In an effort to quicken the process for sanctioning of new building plans and issuing commencement and occupation certificates and make the process more transparent, the BBMP has revamped the town planning department.
In place of the existing 2 wings, the BBMP town planning department will now have 3 wings. This will also ensure that the entire process of obtaining sanctions and certificates goes online.

Currently, the BBMP town planning department’s two wings separated the city into a north zone and south zone. The process of getting building sanctions and certificates takes about 1 month if all the documents are in order.
The jurisdiction of the city will now be divided amongst the three wings; the north, south and central zones. The third, new wing was created by redeploying the staff from the squad that looked into complaints regarding plan deviations.
The squad had been dissolved earlier with the reasoning that the staff has been without a project for over a decade. All three wings will have the power to initiate sanctioning of plans, issue commencement certificates, and occupancy certificates and ensure all these processes are followed through an online system.
This will not only make the process simpler and more convenient but will also curb bribes.

At present, the town planning department will work under three heads. Each wing will be headed by a joint director. He/she will have two deputy directors answerable to him. The team will also have 4 assistant directors and a team of 4 junior engineers or assistant engineers.
