Maralvadi Dam, Ramanagara

Maralvadi Dam is located near the Kanakapura town in the Ramanagara district of Karnataka. The dam is a small reservoir that is built across the river Arkavathy, a tributary of the river Kaveri. The main purpose for the construction of the dam is to provide water needed for the irrigation of agricultural land in the nearby villages.

The reservoir was constructed in the year 1938. The physical structure of the dam extends up to 480 meters in length. It rises to a height of 16.5 meters from the foundation. The spillway of the reservoir is of Ogee type.

Maralvadi Dam: Nearby tourist attractions

Maralvadi Dam is surrounded by many places of tourist attraction. The district of Ramanagara stands cocooned between seven majestic hills. The beautiful town offers plenty of attractions for nature lovers. The culturally rich place has always been a favorite destination for tourists. Some of the major attractions of Ramanagara are as follows:

Ramadevara betta: Ramadevara betta is a well-known hill of the region. The hill has many hollows made in the rock that resembles caves. This hilly region is famous as the location where the classic Hindi movie Sholay was shot. There is a Rama temple and a beautiful pond atop the hill that is frequented by visitors.

Channapattana: Channapattana is a small town famous for wooden toys. The lacquer ware of the region attracts visitors from far off. Bright colored wooden toys in different shapes and sizes and a striking range of jewelry are the primary attractions of the place.

Chunchi Waterfalls: Chunchi waterfall is one of the lovely natural attractions near Ramanagara. The waterfall is situated in the middle of a dry deciduous forest and has a height of about 80 feet. The waterfall offers a majestic sight during the rainy season.

Bilikal Ranganatha Swamy Betta: Bilikal Ranganatha Swamy Betta is famous for having the temple of Lord Ranganatha Swamy standing atop the hill. The peak of the hill has a height of 3870 feet and offers a lovely view of the surrounding areas.

Kabbalamma Temple: The Kabbalamma Temple is dedicated to Goddess Kabbalamma, a manifestation of Mother Goddess Shakti. Goddess Kabbalamma is a popular deity in South India and the temple is a revered site. It is visited by a large number of pilgrims and devotees throughout the year.

Sangam: Sangam is one of the most famous tourist attractions of the region. It is the place where the confluence of two rivers, Arkavathi and Kaveri takes place. The place is a picturesque picnic spot. As the water is not very deep at this place it is ideal for a day-long trip with family and friends.

How to reach Maralvadi Dam

The nearest airport to reach Maralvadi dam is at Bangalore. Ramanagara has a railway station that connects it to the cities of Mysore and Bangalore. The road network of Ramanagara is very strong. There are frequent buses that connect it to the surrounding cities of Mysore, Mangalore, Bangalore, Tumkur, Hosur, etc. In fact, buses are the main mode of transport in Ramanagara.
