The mission of the Indian Music Experience Museum, Bangalore

Established in 2019, the mission of the Indian Music Experience Museum in Bangalore is to preserve and showcase Indian musical heritage through educational programmes and interactive exhibits. Also, it documents and presents the classical forms of Indian music, such as Carnatic and Hindustani. Furthermore, it includes contemporary genres like Indie Pop and Bollywood music.

The IME has so far conducted seven exhibitions, both offline and online.

  • Her Voice, Her Story – Women pioneers of early recording – A preservation of some of the earliest music recordings of India.
  • The Stars – Featured here are a hundred popular artists of Indian music, whose sounds still stir our hearts like the shehnai of Bismillah Khan, the tambura of MS Subbulakshmi, and the concert attire of Bhimsen Joshi.
  • Reaching out – Trace the evolution of recorded music in India from the early Gramophone to the contemporary mobile phones.
  • Stories through songs – Explore the diverse influences of different genres of music in Bollywood film songs and know about the legends of Hindi film music.
  • Songs of struggle – As the name suggests, it portrays how music has influenced political movements on the path to freedom.
  • Instruments gallery – A wonderful display of over 100 musical instruments from across the country, with the necessary information about them.
  • Melting point – Get to know the lesser-known stories of instruments like the violin and the harmonium.
  • Songs of people – Explore the folk and tribal songs of various communities of India and the context in which they were sung.
  • Living traditions – Learn the basic concepts of Hindustani and Carnatic music, and listen to the torchbearers of classical music.
  • Contemporary expressions – Explore the early days of independent indie rock music in India.

Upcoming exhibition (February 1st, 2026 onwards)

Voices of time – It traces the journey of music from mechanical sound devices to brain-responsive systems of the future. It also focuses on how communities have given shape to various musical experiences and innovations across generations.

Apart from the above-mentioned exhibitions, there are also online exhibitions and 3D virtual walkthroughs for music lovers.

Explore the sounds, vibrations, and materials that create music through the various outdoor interactive musical installations.

The Indian Music Experience museum, Bangalore, has various educational aspects to train those interested in music, such as the
