October is a month people generally look forward to as it signals the end of the summer. However, while the cool winds bring respite for some, for others it is a cause for trouble.

The manja used to fly kites in this season often becomes a trap for birds. That’s when Amit Shroff, a bird rescuer in Bangalore step in.

Amit Shroff’s Love For Birds

23-year-old Amit Shroff has a love for birds that goes back to his childhood. Back then he had pet parakeets at home. Today, he has rescued and rehabilitated over 350 birds.

This includes cuckoos, tailor birds, black kites, bulbuls, parakeets, and over 20 other species. For rehabilitation, Shroff works with a number of voluntary organizations.

The Voice Nest Foundation (VNF)

In January 2015, Amit Shroff and three friends;  finance professional Venkatesh Chandra Sai, landscape artist Harsha Tej and bird keeper Rajesh N, who shared his love for birds came together to form the Voice Nest Foundation (VNF).

This is a volunteer group. The months between October and February are their busiest. Birds rescued by the group are rehabilitated at a center in Horamavu or Ulsoor, depending on the proximity from the place of rescue. The group also rescues other animals likes dogs and cats.

How Birds Are Rescued

The VNF gets calls to rescue birds from the BBMP helpline or members of the public. The caller is asked to identify the bird species if possible and to send a photograph of the bird. In most cases, the bird is approached from the back so that it cannot flap its wings and try to fly.

Holding a bird by the tips of is wings or its tail can cause further damage. The bird is then placed in a cardboard box and transported to a rehabilitation center.

In cases where the bird has sustained visible external wounds, the chances of survival are quite low.

Dos and Don’ts Of Bird Rescue

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Do not frighten the bird
  • Transport birds in a closed cardboard box with holes for ventilation
  • Do no transport birds in open cages
  • Do not force feed the bird
  • A bowl of water may be placed near the bird
  • Minimize transportation
