The Bangalore Metro is a rapid transit system connecting the different parts of Bangalore city. It has a mix of elevated, at grade and underground stations. Of the Bangalore Metro Lines constructed in different phases, the Purple and Green Lines are currently operational; the Yellow, Pink and Blue Lines are under construction, and the Orange Line is still under planning.
Purple Line
The Purple Line of the Bangalore Metro Lines connects Whitefield (Kadugodi) in the east with Challaghatta in the southwest, aligning east to west. It forms Phase 1 and 2 of the Bangalore metro. The fully functional Purple Line is 43.49 km and has 37 stations.
Green Line
The Green Line is partially functional and will see its completion in December 2023. This metro line also falls under Phase 1 and Phase 2. Currently, it connects Nagasandra in the northwest to Silk Institute in the southwest and is aligned north to south. The Green Line, however, at present 30.5 kilometres, will increase to 34.46 kilometres after Phase 2. This metro line, which currently has 29 stations, will increase to 32 when it connects Nagasandra to Madavara at the end of Phase 2. The Green Line will see its completion by December 2023
Yellow Line
The Yellow Line connects Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road to Bommasandra and comes under Phase 2. This line connects Electronic City and the Bommasandra industrial area with the Bangalore metro network. It is 18.82 kilometres long and has 16 stations. The Karnataka Government has also consented to the preparation of DPR by the Tamil Nadu government for an extension of the Yellow line from Bommasandra to Hosur in Tamil Nadu. The Yellow Line is under construction and will be fully functional by February 2024.
Pink Line
The Pink Line of the Bangalore Metro Lines connects Kalena Agrahara in the south with Nagawara in the north, aligning from South to North. It covers a distance of 21.25 kilometres and will have 18 stations. The Pink Line is also under construction and is expected to be operational in 2025–26 and forms a part of Bengaluru Metro’s Phase 2 expansion. In addition, there are two phases of the Pink Line, and the first phase may see its completion by December 2024, while the entire line will be around 2026.
Blue Line
The Blue Line, or the ORR-Airport Metro Line, is 58.19 kilometres, consisting of 30 stations. It connects the Central Silk Board with the Kempegowda International Airport. The Blue Line of Bangalore Metro Lines is also under construction, namely Phase 2A (Silkboard to KR Puram) and Phase 2B (KR Puram to Airport) and will see its completion by June 2025 and June 2026, respectively.
Orange Line
The Orange Line of the Bangalore Metro Lines forms a part of Phase 3 of the Bangalore Metro and is still under planning with a length of 80 kilometres. According to the plan, the proposed routes of the Orange Line under Phase 3A connect Kempapura to JP Nagar 4th Ph (along ORR-West). The Orange Line will see its completion by 2028 with 22 stations.
