Kadavinakatta Dam, Bhatkal

Kadavinakatta Dam is constructed across the river Venkatapur. The reservoir is situated in the port town of Bhatkal in Karnataka.  The main objective for the construction of the dam was to meet the water supply requirements of the town all throughout the year.  Today the dam is one the prime sources of water supply for the port town.

Water from the end-of-season rainfalls is stored in the dam for use throughout the year.

Kadavinakatta Dam: A beautiful tourist destination

Kadavinakatta Dam is surrounded by abundant natural beauty. The place is a wonderful destination to visit throughout the year. But during the monsoons the beauty of the dam increases manifolds.

The rainy season fills up the dam and provides a mesmerizing view to the tourists. The gushing water and the enveloping mist of the air provide an outstanding sight for visitors.

The surrounding green hills increase the magical beauty of the dam. But the dam is dangerous for enjoying swimming activities. The swirls in the dam have caused many people to lose their lives. The bank of the dam has a famous temple dedicated to Goddess Durga.

People visiting the dam make it a point to pay a visit to the temple as well. The dam is open to the public on all days of the week between 9 am to 8 pm.

Kadavinakatta Dam: Nearby places of tourist attraction

The Kadavinakatta dam has several places of tourist attraction near it. Some of the popular tourist destinations near the dam are:

Kethapayya Narayan Temple: The Kethapayya Narayan Temple is famous for its architecture, sculpture and engraving. The walls are decorated with carvings depicting stories from Ramayana, Rama Pattabhisheka, Putra Kameshti, Vanavasa and other epics.

Bhatkal Beach: The Bhatkal beach attracts tourists in huge numbers due to the natural beauty of the place. The famous Murudeshwar Temple is located nearby.

Sultan Mosque: The Sultan Mosque was constructed by Tipu Sultan. The mosque attracts tourists due to its marvelous architecture in the Dravidian style.

Bhatkal Light House: The Bhatkal light house was erected in 1891. It is a major attraction for tourists due to its location. The light house stands near the remnants of a fort on a hilltop.

Netrani Island (Pigeon Island): Netrani Island is situated off the Bhatkal coast. The place is famous as a picnic spot. The uninhabited island has to be reached by a fishing trawler from Honawar or Bhatkal. The place is known for its pristine natural beauty and incredible underwater life.

Jamia Masjid: The Jamia Masjid is an ancient structure that is believed to have been constructed in 851 Heigra. The masjid has a huge structure that can accommodate 10000 people inside its three floors and the basement. It is one of the most famous structures of Bhatkal.

Kadavinakatta Dam is a popular tourist destination and can be easily reached as the port town of Bhatkal is well connected to several major cities of Karnataka.

By Air

Bhatkal does not have an airport of its own. The closest major airport to Bhatkal is the Mangalore International Airport. The airport stands at a distance of 137 km from Bhatkal.

By Rail

Bhatkal has a major railway station located centrally in the port town. The railway station has many trains connecting the town to several other major cities of the country, such as Bangalore, Jaipur, New Delhi and Kochi.

By Road

Bhatkal is well connected by buses to most major cities and towns of Karnataka, such as Bangalore, Mangalore, Bidar, Gulbarga, Hubli, Hampi, Hassan, Karwar, etc. It also has buses connecting it to several major cities of the country like Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, etc.
