Mavanuru Malleshwara Temple – The Charming Windmill Temple

Popularly known as ‘The Windmill Temple’, the Mavanuru Malleshwara Temple, Hassan is an unspoiled beauty. It is also known as Mavanuru Bettada Malleshwara temple and is perched atop a hill surrounded by giant windmills. The temple situated in the quaint village of Bijemaranahalli in the Hassan district of Karnataka is a sight to behold. It serves a perfect one-day trip from Bangalore, spanning three hours of travel.

Mavanuru Malleshwara temple architecture 

The temple, although a small structure, is pleasing to the eye due to its Dravidian temple architecture. Its antiquity dates back to the seventeenth century. The temple tower is painted in gleaming gold and is a beautiful sight, complemented by the surrounding beauty.

The presiding deity of the Mavanuru Bettada Malleshwara temple is Lord Shiva, who graces the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Apart from Lord Shiva, there are also other shrines dedicated to Parvati, Ganesha, Veerabadreshwara, and Nageshwara. Every corner of the temple offers spellbinding views of the surrounding landscape.

The Mavanuru Malleshwara temple is an offbeat destination gaining popularity for its scenic beauty. It is a breathtaking sight to look at the giant windmills that surround the temple from any part of its premises. On the whole, the small temple perched on a hilltop surrounded by windmills and scenic splendour is worth the visit.

Facilities

  • There is ample space for car parking.
  • There is no toilet facility
  • There are no shops near the temple. Hence, it is ideal to carry water along with you. However, there are restaurants once you hit the main road.
  • Since the last part of the road to the temple has no lights, it is ideal to go in groups if you wish to reach there early in the morning or late in the evening. 

The best time to visit

The best time to visit the Mavanuru Bettada Malleshwara temple is between November and February during the winter months. July to October is also preferable, owing to the lush green, picturesque views rendered by the monsoon. It is ideal to visit the temple early in the morning, by 9 AM, to avoid the heat and to experience its tranquility at its best.

How to reach the Mavanuru Malleshwara Temple

Mavanuru Bettada Malleshwara Temple is approximately 27 km from Hassan, Karnataka, and 172 km from Bangalore. It takes approximately 3 hours to reach the Mavanuru Bettada Malleshwara temple from Bangalore. The road is well laid, and hence, it is convenient for vehicles to reach the temple. However, you will need to rely on your own transportation, as public transportation is not available. There are a couple of hairpin bends to reach the temple, so drive with care. The drive all the way through is picturesque. The place is ideal for bikers and small groups to visit.

To conclude, the Mavanuru Malleshwara Temple, also known as the ‘Windmill Temple,’ is a must-visit for avid travelers keen to explore offbeat places.
