The rent law in Karnataka has been eased up now by replacing imprisonment with fines. Let’s delve into the details.

- The Legislative Assembly has passed the Karnataka Rent (Amendment Bill) 2025.
- The Bill decriminalises negligible violations by replacing imprisonment with fines.
- The rent law in Karnataka is now aimed at easing the friction between owners and tenants.
- It corresponds with the Centre’s Model Tenancy Act, 2021, to modernise rental regulation, emphasising formal tenancy agreements and allowing faster dispute resolution.
- Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said the amendment will encourage both owners and tenants to enter into formal arrangements, reducing litigation.
- In the words of Mr Gowda,” The existing law prescribes stringent punishment such as imprisonment.” He added, “While the centre has enacted a model tenancy law to decriminalise violations, we are adopting a state legislation. It is in the interest of both the property owners and tenants.”
- In accordance with the amended rent law in Karnataka, an accused will be fined up to Rs. 5,000/- or double the rent he pays to the owner, whichever is higher.
