Originally, Gulbarga University was only a post graduation center of Karnataka University. 1980 witnessed the Government of India bestowing it with the status of a university through an act of law. Located 10 km from Gulbarga city center, the university has 4 research centers and 37 teaching departments. There are 200 qualified members for teaching and at least 1000 non-technical and technical staff members.
There are 350 colleges affiliated to Gulbarga University, and a wide range of programs are offered in the forum of law, technology, social sciences, music, fine arts, commerce and arts. The university focuses to achieve sustainable development, favorable socio-economic change and knowledge through inclusive growth.
What does it Offer?
Gulbarga University has broad classification of its academic disciplines: faculty of science and technology, faculty of arts, faculty of social sciences, faculty of law and education and faculty of commerce and management. Some of the areas under science and technology include applied electronics, geology, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics, microbiology, mineral processing, physics, statistics, sugar technology and zoology.
Languages comprise faculty of arts; and economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, social work and women’s work come under social sciences faculty. A comprehensive MBA course is also offered by Gulbarga University. Courses offered by this institution include M. Phil in faculty of science and technology, M.Sc. in sciences, Ph. D and PG Diploma programs. Some of the facilities offered by the university are a state-of-the-art computer center, guest house, health center, a very popular and comprehensive library, sports facilities, student housing and University Science Instrumentation Center.
Research and Grants
With the establishment of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Board for devising research and development activities, Gulbarga University benefits the society at large and makes academic progress. The Research Advisory Committee is responsible for facilitating research by screening faculty proposals and assessing complete projects.
There is an extensive budget planned for conducting and evaluating several research projects. Many grants have also been awarded to the University, including the Indo-French Academic Exchange Grants during 2002 and 2003 and International Sociological Association travel grants through chairing session in World Congress in Montreal.
The Who’s Who of Gulbarga University
Prof. E.T. Puttaiah is the present Vice Chancellor of Gulbarga University. With extensive experience in environmental pollution studies, environmental impact assessment and ground water quality evaluation, he has been offered myriad awards by the National and State Governments as well as many discerning boards and bodies.
Some of the outstanding teaching staff of the university includes Dr. V.R. Kulkarni, Dr. B.H.M. Mruthyunjaya Swamy, Dr. N.M. Goudgaon, Dr. M.B. Halli, Dr. J.S. Biradar, Dr. K. Sidappa and Dr. A.R. Sandane.
