Mysore Dasara – An Overview
The Mysore Dasara, or the Navarathri, is a 10-day festival in September or October. Mysore Dasara is the “Nadahabba” or the State-Festival of the State of Karnataka, called “Navaratri”. Navaratri in Mysore is Nine-Nights and a 10th day festival celebrated with utmost spectacle and joy.
The Dasara festivities have a rich history of more than 400 years. During this 10-day festival, the usually calm and peaceful city transforms into a hub of celebrations and activities.
Mysore Dasara 2024 – The State Government’s contribution
In the year 2023, the Karnataka government celebrated simple, traditional Dasara owing to the drought situation in the state. However, as the state received good rainfall in 2024, the state government decided to celebrate the festival grandly. Rs.40 crores has been sanctioned for the Mysore Dasara 2024 celebrations.

Mysore Palace
The Mysore Royal family will celebrate the Royal Dasara inside the palace. The private Dasara celebrations will begin on the evening of October 3rd inside the palace. Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, who is also the Mysore-Kodagu MP will perform various rituals. The celebrations will conclude on the Dashami (tenth) day.
Elephants of Mysore Dasara 2024
One of the main attractions of the Mysuru Dasara is the Jamboo Savari. Every year thousands of tourists arrive in the city to see the Dasara elephants. This year the elephant to carry the Mysore Ambari or the Howdah will be Abhimanyu.

Mysore Dasara 2024 Gold card ensures seamless entry and exit to various tourist destinations of Mysore. It also includes entry to the palace premises with seating arrangement for the Jamboo Savari procession. The gold cards are issued online by the Mysore district administration.

Not only Mysore, Dasara is celebrated in many other places across Karnataka in a grand way. The important Dasara celebrations includes
- Madikeri Dasara: Madikeri, the Kashmir of Karnataka will celebrate the 10 days Dasara in a grand way. Dashamantapas are the major attractions of Madikeri Dasara. Madikeri is located just two and a half hours drive from Mysore.
- Mangaluru Dasara: Every year, Shri Gokarnanatha Swamy temple in Mangaluru organizes Dasara in a grand manner. Mangaluru is a coastal town. Tourists can also visit the Shringeri Shri Sharadamba temple, Kolluru Shri Mookambika temple, Kateel Shri Durgaparameshwari temple.
- Srirangapatna Dasara: This year Shrirangapatna Dasara will be celebrated for four days starting from October 4. Srirangapatna is located just 30 minutes drive from Mysore on Bengaluru-Mysuru national highway 275.
- Chamarajanagara Dasara: Chamarajanagara Dasara will also be a ten days celebration. The Chamarajanagara district administration will organize various events as a part of the celebrations. Chamarajanagar is just one hour drive from Mysore city.
The Jumbo Savari
The Jumbo Savari (Mysore Dasara Procession) is held on the streets of Mysore city on Vijayadashami. It starts from the Mysore Palace and culminates at a place called Bannimantap.
The main attraction of this procession is the idol of the Goddess Chamundeshwari, which is placed on a golden mantapa on the top of an elephant. The royal couple and other guests worship this idol before it is taken around in the procession.
Colourful tableaux, dance groups, music bands, decorated elephants, horses, and camels form a part of the procession. After the Jamboo Savari, a torchlight parade occurs in the evening at the Bannimantap Parade Grounds.

The Torch Light Parade
Vijayadashami sees the culmination of the celebrations of the Mysore Dasara. On the night of Vijayadashami Panjina Kavayatthu or the Torchlight is held at the Bannimantapa. The Maharaja comes riding his horse into the parade grounds and is saluted by the military units. The place will be illuminated by lights lit up to welcome the king and his military officials. Initially, the parade was conducted to infuse courage into the subjects by revealing the ruling king’s power and army efficiency. Nowadays, the parade is conducted in remembrance of the bygone days of the power and grandeur of the erstwhile rulers. Hence, people flock to gain a glimpse into the history of the great Mysore empire.
There is also an equestrian show and feats of acrobatics performed on motorbikes. However, the laser show held in the Palace Grounds is captivating and highly preferred by one and all. The grand event ends with the military band’s national anthem of the erstwhile Mysore state.
