Manik Prabhu Temple history
Shri Manik Prabhu Maharaj, after whom the Manik Prabu temple came to be known, was a great saint, a yogi and a philosopher who propagated the philosophy of Sakalamata Siddhant. His philosophy has the Upanishadic core of universal oneness, extending beyond religion’s narrow dogmas. Furthermore, regarded as an incarnation of Bhagwan Shri Dattatreya, he was worshipped by one and all. Apart from this, his name is also associated with the first war of Indian independence during the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857. He emphasised the Bhakti marga and has made many poetic contributions.
According to popular belief, Shri Manik Prabhu Maharaj was born in 1817 and left his mortal coil in 1865. To propagate his teachings, he founded the Manik Prabhu Samsthan. Today, the institution is one of the country’s significant spiritual organisations.
Owing to the religious and political disparities of the time, Shri Manik Prabhu envisioned peaceful coexistence. As a result, people from different walks of life revere and honour him. Also, Muslims associate him with Mehaboob Subhani, a Muslim Saint. Before shedding his body, Shri Manik Prabhu Maharaj built a dargah for the Muslim devotees.
When the time to give up his body approached, Shri Manik Prabhu Maharaj made the meritorious Shri Manohar Manik Prabhu, his brother’s son, the successor to his spiritual seat to carry forward his teachings. It was, in fact, Shri Manohar Manik Prabhu who designed the temple over the samadhi of Shri Manik Prabhu Maharaj. Thus followed the structure of the Manik Prabhu temple.
