When you talk of gardens and Bangalore, Cubbon Park is usually the first to come to mind. But, this isn’t the only garden in the city. With over 1200 gardens dotting its landscape, it’s no wonder that Bangalore is also known as the Garden City. One of the city’s most unique gardens – the Sir M Visvesvaraya Rain Water Harvesting Theme Park.

Visvesvaraya Rain Water Harvesting Theme Park

Located in Jayanagar, this garden was designed and developed by a scientist named AR Shivakumar and made possible by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board.

As the name suggests, it features different ways to harvest rainwater – there are 26 models of the different types of rainwater harvesting. A trip here can be both relaxing and informative at the same time.

The park is spread across 1.5 acres of land. At the entrance is a small auditorium where videos on techniques to save water are screened. From here on, as you walk around the park, you can admire and learn about different water harvesting techniques. The models are accompanied by infographics and Q&A segments that address frequently asked questions.

The park is aimed at not just educating people on ways to save rainwater but also teaching them how to implement these techniques at home. It could be as simple as digging a hole big enough to hold a tank and opening it out when it rains.

Some of the other techniques may require a plumber’s technical expertise but they are mostly very doable. The Park also has model toilets and bathrooms that could prove inspirational.

Along with the rainwater harvesting models, the park also has small gardens with flowering plants as well as vegetables and fruit trees. These have been planted not only to beautify the space –but also to play a role in harvesting water. There are some plants here that soak up groundwater and others that thrive on minimal watering.

End your day with a picnic at the Amphitheatre as you plan on ways to start rainwater harvesting in your home. This is the ideal place for a family outing.
