Santhigiri Ashram was established by Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru in 1964. Today, the center has several branches spread across several cities of South India, including one at Bangalore and one in the capital city of New Delhi. Sishyapoojitha Amritha JnanaThapaswini, a great follower and disciple of Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru, is the present spiritual head of the ashram.

Santhigiri Ashram preaches spiritual values and secular ideas of life to its followers. The ashram encourages leading a life of peace with God and nature. It inspires ideas of universal love, religious harmony and world peace. The guiding principles of the ashram are inspired by the teachings of the great spiritual leaders of the world. The ashram does not emphasize any particular religious tradition but works for the betterment of humanity in general. The origin of the Bangalore branch of the ashram can be traced back to the late 1970s. At that time, Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru had sent a group of six disciples on a Padayathra to Prayag (Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh in Northern India. On that trip, the disciples met a few people from Bangalore who were later instrumental in establishing the Bangalore branch of the ashram on 23rd of April in 2002.
The Guru had visualized the ashram as a medium to bring about spiritual resurgence in the world. The ashram acts as the spiritual institution that guides the general people towards a better life by following the principles of secular spirituality.

- Annadanam: The main ashram and its various centres offer Annadanam, or a gift of food, to all the visitors and the inmates of the ashram.
- Athurasevanam: The ashram has several Ayurveda research centres and hospitals to cater to the ailing people. The ashram also conducts healthcare programs inside and outside the ashram. It organizes medical camps following the principle of Athurasevanam, or care of the ailing, as taught by the Guru.
- Athmabodhanam: Athurasevanam, or spiritual awakening, is a major vision of the ashram and the founder leader. The awakening is performed on two levels. At the first level, ignorance is eliminated, and on the next level, knowledge of reality is imparted to the people.
- Economic development: The ashram also encourages and works towards the economic development of the masses. It offers opportunities for improving trade skills and supports women and cottage industry programs. This is per the ashram’s principle of encouraging a revitalized life.
