Karnataka poll 2018 results – here is a detailed region wise break down of the results. Know how Old Mysuru, Bengaluru rural and urban, Coastal, Mumbai and Hyderabad Karnataka voted in the 2018 assembly election.

May 12^th and 15^th were important dates in Karnataka this year. After the state went to polls on May 12th, the results were declared on May 15^th. The election saw a 72.13% voter turnout. This is the highest voter turnout recorded in Karnataka. This election also marked the debut of the Aam Aadmi Party in Karnataka.

Of the 222 seats that went to polls, the BJP won 104 seats making it the party with the most number of seats. However, this was not enough for them to form a government. Ultimately, it was an alliance between the Congress which won 78 seats and the JD(S) which won 37 seats that formed the government. One seat each was won by the Karnataka Pragnyavantha Janatha Party (KPJP) and an independent candidate.

All of Karnataka did not vote in the same way. While minority appeasement played an important role in deciding the outcome in some areas, in other areas, the outcome was influenced by civic issues. Karnataka can be broadly divided into 6 regions – Old Mysuru, Bengaluru Urban, Coastal Karnataka, Mumbai Karnataka, Central Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka. Let’s take a closer look at the results in each of these regions.

Karnataka Poll 2018 Results – Old Mysuru

There were a total of 66 seats being voted for in Old Mysuru. The major districts here are Mysuru, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Mandya, Kolar, Ramanagaram, Chamarajnagar, Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru. The area is dominated by the Vokkaliga community and owes its allegiance to the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore. This is a difficult region for the BJP and has traditionally seen a tussle between the Congress and JD(S).

This year, the BJP fared much better than it did in 2013 with a total of 15 seats as compared to 8 seats in the previous elections. The Congress Party which is dependent on the Dalit and minority vote bank lost out on a few seats because of the way they targeted the JD(S) leaders HD Kumaraswamy and HD Deve Gowda.

Where they had won 26 seats in the 2013 elections, in 2018, they won only 20 seats. The JD(S) was the clear winner in this region with 30 seats to their name. HD Kumaraswamy, the JD(S) CM candidate won seats from Ramanagara and Channapatna.

Karnataka Poll 2018 Results – Bengaluru Rural and Urban

As the name suggests, this district comprises of the cosmopolitan town of Bengaluru and the rural areas around it. There were 28 seats that were voted for in this district. As one would imagine, civic issues were important factors that influenced the election results in this region. This included traffic congestion, potholes, pollution, corruption, and delivery of services.

The region is dominated by a Tamil speaking population but also has a Malayalam and Telegu speaking electorate. The region is notorious for a poor voter turnout. For this election, Bengaluru Urban recorded only a 57.28% voter turnout. Bengaluru North and South saw a voter turnout of 53.21% and 52.8% respectively. In terms of the election results, there was little change to be noted.

Karnataka Poll 2018 Results – Coastal Karnataka

Coastal Karnataka consists of 3 districts; Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. This region has prospered through trade and is considered a communal tinderbox because of the high level of personal consciousness as a minority or majority. This has been the BJP’s stronghold.

As in the 2013 elections, the JD(S) failed to win a single seat in this region. The BJP benefitted from rising religious extremism and minority appeasement. They won a total of 16 seats.

On the other hand, the Congress was able to retain only 3 of the 13 seats they won in 2013. It is important to note that the Congress had been able to win 13 seats in 2013 only because of the split in the BJP vote between the BJP and Karnataka Janata Pakshe at the time.

Karnataka Poll 2018 Results – Mumbai Karnataka

Mumbai Karnataka refers to the districts that were earlier part of the Bombay Presidency. This includes Karwar or Uttar Kannada, Vijayapura, Belagavi, Bagalkot, Haveri, Dharwar, and Gadag.44 seats went to polls in this region. This is a largely rural area dominated by the Lingayat community.

The BJP won a majority of seats in the region. This can be attributed to many factors. According to some, the hope for a resolution to the Mahadayi water dispute between Goa and Karnataka by having the BJP in power in both states and Narendra Modi as Prime Minister simultaneously is a major factor.

The BJP’s CM candidate Yeddyurappa is also known as a strong Lingayat leader. As a result of this, the BJP won a grand total of 26 seats while the Congress could only win 16 seats.

Karnataka Poll 2018 Results – Central Karnataka

Central Karnataka consists of Chitradurga, Tumakuru, Ballari, Davangere, and Shivamogga. 27 seats were fought over in this region. Issues such as unemployment, lack of industries and lack of clean drinking water were influential factors to the election results in this region. The BJP dominated this region with Yeddyurappa winning his seat in Shikaripura. His break from the BJP had cost the party dearly in 2013.

Karnataka Poll 2018 Results – Hyderabad Karnataka

Hyderabad Karnataka is called so because it contains districts that were once part of the Hyderabad state. 40 seats were voted for this region. The districts here include Bidar, Ballari, Koppal, Raichur, Kalaburagi, and Yadgir.

The area is dominated by SCs and Lingayats and is considered the least developed region of Karnataka. Though the Reddy brothers were named in the Ballari mining scan, the BJP’s risk of supporting them paid off and they won both their seats.

The Lingayat support also benefitted the BJP. While the Congress may have won the most seats in this region, the BJP party showed the most progress by winning 11 more seats than they had in 2013.
