• The exit polls in India began in 1957 during the 2nd parliament elections
• The Indian Institute of Public Opinion conducted the poll
• The national samples used until the late 90s was 20,000-30,000
• The first formal exit poll was conducted in 1996 by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS)
• Public broadcaster Doordarshan tasked CSDS to the do the exit poll.

1. 2004 Lok Sabha Elections

• According to the exit polls, the NDA – led by Atal Bihari Vajyapee would secure 240 to 250 seats When the result came the UPA got 216 seats
• They were projected to get only 170 to 205
• BJP only managed 187

During 2004, Vajpayee government dissolved the Parliament early hoping to repeat the triple victories in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan state elections

2. 2014 Lok Sabha Elections

• Exit polls predicted a BJP-led NDA government, however, they did not predict a majority for BJP
• BJP’s was predicted to fall short of the majority mark of 272
• NDA scored a major victory with tally well above 300
• BJP alone crossed the majority mark
• The INC could only secure 44 seats

3. UP Assembly Elections 2017

• Exit polls predicted a hung assembly in UP with BJP emerging as the largest party
• BJP won 300 seats proving exit polls wrong

4. Bihar Assembly Election 2015

• Most exit polls predicted no clear majority to any party
• In the actual result, the RJD-JDU-Congress scored a thumping victory
• Lalu Prasad’s RJD emerged as the single largest party

5. Delhi Assembly Elections 2015

• Most of the exit polls had predicted an AAP victory just crossing the halfway mark
• Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) got 67 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly
