Bangalore welcomes summer each year with its flowering trees of various hues, blooming in full glory, beautifying the city. Most of the flowers of these trees make a dense cover over the treetops, dominating the scene with their splendid colours. Here are some of the flowering trees in Bangalore that paint a pretty picture of the city.
Queen’s Flower Tree
The Lagerstroemia speciosa is the botanical name of Queen’s Flower tree. It also bears the names Giant crepe-myrtle, Queen’s Crepe-Myrtle, Banabá plant, or Pride of India. Owing to its resemblance to a delicate crepe paper, it attains the name the’ Queen Crape Myrtle’. This flowering tree in Bangalore is in full bloom in the months of April to June.
The flowers, varying from pink to purple colour, adorn the premises of the City Railway Station, in Lalbagh, near the South End close to RNR choultry, near the High Court, Vidhana Soudha and many other areas in the city during summer.
Gulmohar Tree
The Gulmohar trees set the garden city ablaze with their vibrant vermillion hue. This flowering tree is a popular avenue tree in Bangalore. Just before Summer the tree looks barren sans leaves with protruding branches. Suddenly luminous leaves show up followed by flowers which slowly cover the leaves creating a vermillion cover as if setting the place ablaze. It is native to Madagascar. Its botanical name is Delonix regia, while assuming other names like Royal Poinciana, Flamboyant, Flame of the forest etc.
The Gulmohar tree dominates the areas of Rajajeshwari Nagar, Malleshwaram, Rajaji Nagar, Shankar Mutt, Seshadripuram and Yelahanka with their vibrant presence.
Copper Pod
The Copper Pod trees flank the Nanda Road (continuation of RV road) from South End to Jayanagar. They are also found in K.R.Circle, Nrupathunga Road.
They bear clusters of golden yellow flowers at the end of their branches, which is a beautiful sight to behold in summer. Their petals carpet the ground around them.
Peltophorum pterocarpum is the botanical name and this flowering tree also bears other names like Yellow-flamboyant, Yellow flametree, Yellow poinciana or Yellow-flame. It is native to SouthEastern Asia.
Pink Poui
The Pink Poui tree blooms in dense clusters that the leaves are hardly visible. It is native to Mexico, Venezuela and Ecuador and carries the botanical name Tabebuia Rosea.
This flowering tree blossoms in full measure in the summer season in Bangalore near National College, Cubbon Park, Lalbagh, around Jayanagar 4th Block Shopping Complex and near the GPO in Bangalore.
The Tree of Gold
True to its name, the Tree of Gold or the Tabebuia Argentea blooms during summer in clusters with alluring yellow tubular flowers that dominate the atmosphere.
This flowering tree can be seen in many parts of Bengaluru including City Railway Station, and Cubbon Park, Vish. Ind. & Tech. Museum – Kasturba Road and in many other places in the city.
