Rasam Recipe – Tasty, Easy, Healthy And Everybody’s Favorite

Here is an easy to make rasam recipe. And the best part is that you can make it with ingredients easily available at home.  

First the restaurants and malls were closed, then meal deliveries became sporadic and as the lockdown intensified, people were forced to step back into their kitchens. Now you can’t post pictures of dal-rice everyday on Instagram so here’s an easy alternative- rasam!

Tangy with a hint of peppery spice, rasam is a treat for the taste buds. It’s easy to make and uses ingredients you should be able to find quite easily in your kitchen.

Health Benefits Of Rasam

A bowl of rasam offers much more than just delicious flavours. It’s a powerhouse of nutrients like Vitamin A and C and folic acid that help build immunity.

It eases digestion and prevents constipation. Since your outdoor time may be limited, rasam can also be helpful in weight management since it boosts metabolism. That’s not all, it is a rich source of antioxidants that keep your skin young too.

The Easiest Rasam Recipe

It’s a myth that you must have rasam powder in your kitchen to make this awesome gravy. You can do this quite easily without the powder too. Here’s an easy rasam recipe.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 medium tomato- finely chopped
  • 1 1-2” piece of tamarind
  • 10 – 12 curry leaves
  • 2 – 3 dry red chilies – deseeded
  • 2-3 tsp chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 large pinch hing
  • 2 cups water + ½ cup hot water
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • salt as required
  • 3 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp whole black pepper
  • 6 – 7 garlic

How To Cook

  • Grind the cumin, black pepper and garlic and keep aside
  • Soak the tamarind in ½ cup hot water for 30 minutes
  • Squeeze the pulp and strain
  • Heat oil in a pan on a low flame
  • Crackle the mustard seeds
  • Add hing, red chilies and curry leaves. Fry till the red chilies deepen in color
  • Add tomatoes and saute till they soften
  • Add the ground spices with turmeric powder
  • Add the tamarind pulp and stir
  • Add 2 cups of water, season with salt and let it boil
  • Garnish with chopped coriander

This healthy gravy can be served in a cup by itself or with steamed rice. Whether you like it as a drink of a meal, rasam is a healthy, tasty dish. And, it’s proof that eating something delicious doesn’t necessarily have to be a time-consuming or expensive affair.

You may enjoy it so much so that when the lockdown ends, you may prefer your own rasam to what’s available in restaurants.
