Solar Rooftop Scheme Of Central Govt: All You Need to Know!

PM – Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is one of the popular schemes announced recently by the central government. The idea behind this scheme is harvesting solar power for domestic use, local self-government, etc. The central government’s solar rooftop scheme aims to provide free electricity to one crore households. This scheme, the solar rooftop Yojana, is designed so that households that benefit will get 300 units of electricity free every month.  The central government will provide subsidies for the installation of solar units.

Solar Rooftop Scheme: PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Details

Subsidy

According to the central government’s solar rooftop Yojana scheme, the public will get Rs. 30,000 subsidy per kW up to 2 kW and Rs. 18,000 per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW. A subsidy for systems larger than 3 kW is capped at Rs 78,000.

The scheme also provides a subsidy of 60% of the solar unit cost for systems up to 2 kW capacity and 40 percent of additional system cost for systems between 2 to 3 kW capacity as per the Central government’s solar rooftop Yojana scheme.  The subsidy is capped at 3 kW capacity. 

Finance for the installation of rooftop solar panel 

Under the solar rooftop scheme, consumers can get collateral-free, low-interest loan products to install rooftop solar panels. The interest rate is 0.5% above the prevailing Repo Rate decided by the Reserve Bank of India. 

How is the Interest rate calculated under the scheme

Under the scheme, if RBI  fixes a repo rate of 6.5%, consumers will get a loan at 6% instead of  7%.  For more information click here 

Subsidy for Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Association (GHS/RWA) is Rs.18,000 per kW for common facilities, including EV charging.  As per the scheme guidelines, residents in the GHS/RWA  can install  up to 500 kW capacity (@3 kW per house).

  • The registration process involves selecting your state, followed by district, electricity distribution company, and entering your account number, and Aadhar linked mobile number. 
  • The process involves logging in with the registered mobile number. Once you log in, you are directed to various pages, including selecting the vendor of your choice in your district, metering, and other processes.

Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity for households

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, if the average monthly consumption of a household is between  0 and 150 units, a 1 – 2 kW Rooftop Solar Plant is recommended. If the average monthly consumption of a household is between 150-300 units, a 2 – 3 kW solar rooftop plant is recommended. If the average monthly consumption of a household is above 300 units, 3 kW is recommended.
