Karnataka Flood – An Overview
For the second year in a row, the Karnataka is witnessing an unprecedented rainfall. From Alamatti dam over 5 lakh cusecs of water were released in a single day which is an all-time record. Similarly, from Kabini dam, 1.50 lakh cusecs of water are released in a day which is also again a record.
The worst flood and landslides affected districts of the state are Bagalkote, Raichur, Belagavi, Vijayapura, Uttara Kannada, Shivamoga, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Mysuru.
As rivers touched danger level water has been released from Alamatti, Narayanapura, Kabini, Thunga, Bhadra, Kadra and Harangi dams. The heavy discharge of water has been affected by thousands of villages.
In Shivamogga district famous British Bungalow built by the British rulers in the year 1843 is under threat as the landslides hit the adjoining areas.
Including Belagavi, Kodagu and Uttara Kannada 15 districts are affected by the flood in the state. People of this region are facing huge losses and the rebuilding exercise requires huge resources.
They have lost their property, crop, house, cattle and few even their family members. Thus on a humanitarian ground public can join their hand with the government to rebuild their life. Those who are interested to donate can transfer the amount to the following account. Even the public can donate through cheque or DD.
Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa estimated that around INR 5,000 crores required to rebuild the flood-affected places. He requested the general public to join hands with the state government in this mammoth exercise by donating money. Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murty already pledged Rs.10 crores for this purpose.
Karnataka Flood – Rescue Mission
Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), Indian coast guard and navy divers, Fire and emergency are involved in the rescue operations. Additional NDRF teams have been pressed for the rescue operations in flood-hit areas.
Two Indian Air force choppers and four helicopters are deployed to airlift the victims. Controls room come under these places are functioning 24×7 hours to assist the needy.
As much as 467 relief camps were opened to provide shelter, clean drinking water, food and other relief materials to the victims. Nearly 95,000 people have taken shelter in these camps. More than 1, 24,300 people have rescued from flood-affected regions. Lakhs of people are displaced and affected by the flood.
Like last year, Kodagu is witnessing landslides. Virajpet is the worst-hit taluk. Indian Army has been pressed into rescue operations.
