Bangalore Swachh Ranking Why The Drop?

There are multiple reasons why the BBMP says the city’s rating has dropped. According to some senior officials, the results show the results of Corporators, the commissioner and mayor having different aims and the lack of a clear policy on waste management.

Other officials claim that this drop in ranking has been because of infrastructural reasons such as insufficient dustbins in commercial places, absence of GPS tracking in all garbage collecting vehicles and lack of tenders for waste management.

They also claimed that citizen participation was only half of what had been expected. At individual event levels and festivals, garbage management has been good but the overall quality of waste management has been very poor. The quality of garbage segregation has also dropped by over 50%.

Bengaluru’s inability to handle its legacy waste is another major contributor. Bengaluru has over 40 lakh tonnes of legacy waste and does not know how to handle it.

Though cement industries are willing to use this waste for energy generation, the corporation does not want to fund its transportation and hence the situation hangs in limbo.
