A recent survey by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has shown that Karnataka continues to be favored by international students seeking higher education. International students In Karnataka – Where Do They Come From?

Most of India’s foreign student population comes from its neighboring developing nations. The top ten countries sending students to India constituted 63.7% of the country’s total international student population.

Most students are from Nepal. They were followed by Afghanistan in the second place, Bangladesh in third place and Sudan in fourth place. Foreign students in India come from over 164 different countries.

International Students In Karnataka And India

Karnataka’s percentage share of international students in India has been between 20% and 35% every year since 2012-13. One of the reasons for this could be the Karnataka government’s focus on developing infrastructure.

In the year 2018-19, a total of 47,427 foreign students were enrolled in Indian colleges and universities. Of these, 10,023 students were enrolled in colleges and universities in Karnataka.

Though this is a considerable percentage of the total international student population, it is significantly lower than the foreign student population in Karnataka in 2015-16.

The survey by the HRD Ministry looked into the foreign student population in higher educational institutions. For this survey, educational institutions were categorized as stand-alone institutions, colleges, and universities. 9,190 stand-alone institutions, 38,179 colleges, and 962 universities were covered by the survey.

Of the total foreign student population in India, maximum students are enrolled in undergraduate courses. While 73.4% of foreign students were undergraduates, 16.1% were PG students.

In terms of course popularity, the BTech course had the highest number of foreign students. This was followed by BBA courses, BSc courses, and BA courses. Other popular undergraduate courses include BPharma, MBBS, BCA, BDS, and nursing.
