With the Western Ghats running along its length, Karnataka boasts of numerous stunning waterfalls. One of the less talked about waterfalls is the Hanuman Gundi falls or Hanumangundi falls. This waterfall is also known as the Sutanabbe Falls or Soothanabbi Falls. Water cascades over a height of 77 feet foaming on rock edges and creating rainbow-like effects as the mist distort the sunlight.
To see the waterfall in its full glory, you would need to plan a visit during or just after the monsoons. But if you check it out in the summer, you’ll get an opportunity to soak your feet in the lake at the foot of the waterfall or if you’re adventurous, even take a dip.
Where Is The Hanuman Gundi Waterfall?
This waterfall is sandwiched between the Karkala and Lakya dams in the Kudremukh national park. This is about 79 km from Mangalore and hence an ideal day trip from the city. It’s about 20 km away from the Kudremukh town.
What’s Special About The Hanumangundi Waterfall?
Imagine chilled, crystal clear water cascading over rocks and pooling at your feet – that’s what the Hanuman Gundi waterfall looks and feels like. The tiered waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery interspersed with jagged rocks.
Around 300 man-made steps carved into the hillside take visitors from the top to the bottom of the falls and back again. This is a safe path but if you go during the monsoons, you must watch your step.
The waterfall and its surrounding area are managed by the forest department. A nominal entrance fee is charged at the gate and you can then spend all day picnicking around the waterfall.

Kudremukh National Park
The Kudremukh national park is best known for its lion-tailed macaque monkey inhabitants. It is also home to leopards, tigers, langur monkeys, spotted deer, sloth bears, civets and wild dogs. The park is a popular trekking destination and accommodation is available in the form of dormitories.
Lakhya Dam
The Lakhya dam stands over a tributary of the Bhadra river. The dam offers spectacular views of the Kudremukh forests and is ideal for a family outing. It is open to visitors for limited hours.
How To Reach Hanuman Gundi waterfall
By Road
The waterfall is about 85 km from Mangalore and is connected by the National Highway 13. The drive takes about 2.5 hours and can be completed by private transportation.
By Rail
It is best to travel to Mangalore rail and then drive down to the waterfall.
By Air
Mangalore airport is the nearest airport to the waterfalls. From there you need to take a taxi to reach the waterfalls.
