Engineering has traditionally been one of the most preferred streams of study. However, the scene is gradually changing. Though over 50,000 new seats have been approved for the coming year, the total intake has been slowly dropping. Let’s understand the changing dynamics of engineering seats in Karnataka.
New Seats Added
For admissions in the year 2019-20, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved over 50,000 additional seats. The new seats have been spread across diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses in 174 new engineering colleges.
This includes 10 new engineering degree colleges and 3 diploma colleges in Karnataka. Together, these 13 institutions will offer 11,418 seats.

Overall Drop In Engineering Seats
Despite the intake increased every year, the number of engineering seats available has been steadily dipping. In the past two years alone, the number of seats available has dropped by almost 4 lakhs.

Over the past few years, the AICTE has been forced to withdraw courses from a number of institutions as a result of reduced intake in the mechanical and civil engineering streams. Where once the annual student intake dropped by around 50,000-60,000, the difference each year is now a few lakhs.
A total of 178 institutions have been closed down across the country. Another 4,240 engineering institutions have applied to reduce their intake by 2.41 lakh seats.
This change has been approved. On the same note, 376 colleges which were approved on 2018-19 have not applied for re-approval in 2019-20. As a result, 13,400 seats have been voided.
Engineering Seats In Karnataka
In 2018-19, 21,000 undergraduate seats remained vacant. However, this year, an additional 10,638 new seats in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Karnataka have been sanctioned.
780 seats have also been added to three polytechnic/ diploma colleges in the state. This puts Karnataka’s share of new seats introduced at 27%.
