Why is Abbey Falls famous?

Abbey falls is widely acclaimed for its picturesque beauty in serene surroundings. It is formed by many mountain springs and at a certain point joined by River Kaveri, it cascades about 70 ft over the rocks to form a breathtaking waterfall. It may not plummet from a great height, however it falls over a wider area, which makes it appealing to the eye. Since it is just 8 km from Madikeri, Coorg, it is more accessible for tourists.

There is a hanging bridge that is found in front of the Abbey falls at a distance from where tourists can gain a good view of the waterfall.

History of Abbey Falls

Abbey falls was formerly called the Jessy falls during the British era. Coorg’s first British chaplain, enamoured with its fascinating beauty, named it after his daughter Jessy.

Later, after independence it was taken over by the government after which it changed hands to one Mr. Neravanda B. Nanaiah, who planted coffee and spices in the surrounding area. This provided a better visibility of the falls for the tourists. Though the falls cascades in a private property, this doesn’t serve as a deterrent for tourists to flock it all round the year.

What is the best time to visit Abbey Falls?

The waters cascade with full body during monsoon from July to October and so is a good time to visit Abbey Falls. However, it is ideal to visit the falls all round the year.
