Bangalore’s origins go back to 4,000 BC or the old stone age based on stone implements found at Jalahalli, Sidhapura and Jadigenahalli, all of which are Bangalore’s outskirts today.

1000 BCBurial grounds  found in Koramangala and Chikkajala; pre-historic sites discovered near Anekal and Tabaranahalli.
27 BCTrans-oceanic trade between Bangalore and ancient  civilisations ; coins of Roman emperors  Augustus , Tyberius and Claudius found in Yeshwantpur and HAL areas
850 AD‘Bengalooru’ appears on Mauryan empire milestone [9th century]
1015Chola  Empire takes over City
1120Veera Ballala II calls it ‘Benda Kalooru’ or ‘Town of Boiled Beans’ (after a poor woman feeds him beans in the forest)
1537Kempe Gowda I designs City as it exists today. (Kempe Gowda II built the 4 towers)
1638Shahaji Bhonsle (Shivaji’s father) captures City for Adil Shah who gifts it to him
1640Shivaji marries Bangalore girl
1687Aurangzeb’s army captures City
1690Aurangzeb sells it to the Wodeyars for Rs. 300,000
1759Wodeyar gifts it to Hyder Ali who starts building Lal Bagh. Tipu Sultan completes it
1791Cornwallis defeats Tipu but returns City to him
1799Tipu dies. City returned to Wodeyar
1800Bangalore GPO [General Post Office] opened
1809British Cantonment established
1812St. Mark’s Cathedral built
1831British take-over administration
1853Sunday  declared  a weekly holiday
18591st train steams out of City
1862Two municipal bodies – civil and cantonment – established.
1864Sankey builds Cubbon Park. British  currency notes  in circulation
1867Attara Kacheri built
1872Seshadripuram and Chamarajpet formed
1877Great famine
1881Mysore kingdom rendered back to Wodeyers. Scene set for making Bangalore a modern city. The first telephone arrives in the cantonment
1882Bangalore-Mysore railway inaugurated
1887Bangalore Palace built
1898The great plague. Basavanagudi and Malleswaram added.
19031st  motor car  rolls out on the city roads
1905India’s 1st electric bulb lit in Bangalore City Market
1906Prince of Wales visits with his wife who unveils  Queen Victoria  statue in Cubbon Park
1909Indian Institute of Science built
1927/34Mahatma Gandhi visits Bangalore
19401st flight Bangalore/Bombay
1948English newspaper  Deccan  Herald launched
1949Two municipalities merge, laying foundation for modern Bangalore
1954Vidhana Soudha built
