Sakleshpur – Of Forts and Temples

Sakleshpur (Sakleshapura) is a town located in the Hassan district of Karnataka. The name of the place is said to be derived from a Shivalinga which was dubbed as ‘Shakaleshwara’. Being located in the Western Ghats, the region boasts of incredible biodiversity.

Sakleshpur is a sparsely populated region, with only about 23,000 residents as per the 2011 government census report. The climate of the region is temperate, making the place an ideal spot for coffee and spice plantations. For people who love to explore nature, Sakleshpura offers an ideal getaway.

Manjarabad Fort

The fort is said to have been constructed by Tipu Sultan and offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding hills from the top. Some believe that there is a hidden tunnel which connects this fort to his Srirangapattana Fort in Mysore. The Manjarabad Fort is located by the side of National Highway 48.

Bettada Bhairaveshwara Temple

Located on top of the Pandavara Gudda hill, this temple is said to be about 600 to 800 years old. From the top, you can enjoy the beautiful views of the valley. During the rainy season, the mountains are covered with thick mists.

Jenukal Gudda

This is the third highest peak in Karnataka and is a very popular destination among people who love trekking. The entire region is covered with lush greenery and the climate is very pleasant. Jenukal Gudda is located at Maragunda, approximately 24 kilometres from Sakleshpura.

Manjehalli Waterfalls

This splendid waterfall is a famous picnic spot and is situated just a kilometre from the Manhehalli village. It is located at the foothills of the Pushpagiri Mountains. The water falls from a height of about 20 feet, giving an incredible view. Monsoon season is the best time to visit this waterfall.

Green Route Trek

This trekking trail is located between Sakleshpur and Kukke Subramanya. You will pass through beautiful waterfalls, forests and railway tunnels as you make the journey.

Sakaleswara Temple

The most famous temple in the region; it is situated on the banks of the River Hemavathi and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The architecture of the temple shows strong Hoysala influence and therefore it is believed to have been constructed during the time of the Hoysala Empire.

Raxidi Estate

A very famous coffee estate spread over 1000 acres; this is the place to visit if you are planning to take a long break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The place is usually cool, with mists covering the area, especially in the mornings. You will find many species of plants and animals in the surroundings. Cardamom and pepper plantations are also present at the Raxidi Estate.

Located in Bisele village, this viewpoint offers a magnificent look at three mountain ranges – Pushpagiri, Kumara Parvatha and Dodda Betta. The region has rich biodiversity and is also home to a large number of elephants. If you are into trekking, you will love the journey to the top.

How to Reach Sakleshapura

You have the following options to reach Sakleshpur.

By Air

The nearest airport to Sakleshpura is the Bajpe Airport located in Mangalore, about 101 kilometres away. The next closest one is the Mysore Airport, located further away at 118 kilometres.

By Rail

If you choose to get to Sakleshpa by train, you have three options – the Sakleshwar Railway station which gets you to the heart of the location, or other nearby stations like the Subrahmanya Road Railway station or the Hassan Station. Make sure to check the train schedules before drawing up travel plans since they can change quite frequently.

By Road

There are regular buses to Sakleshpur from nearby areas like Hassan. So, exploring the place by road should be easy. If you are traveling by car, just follow the Bangalore – Mangalore road and you will quickly reach the destination without any trouble.
