The world-famous Mysore Dasara is celebrated between the 15th and 24 October 2023. It will be inaugurated by the well-known Kannada music composer lyricist Hamsalekha. He will inaugurate the 10-day celebration atop the Chamundi hills. The inaugural ceremony will be held between 10:15 AM and 10:36 AM.

Mysore Dasara Events 2023 – Palace Illumination

• Mysore Palace will be illuminated with more than 97,000 bulbs.

Mysore Dasara – An Overview

The Mysore Dasara, or the Navarathri, is a 10-day festival in September or October. Mysore Dasara is the “Nadahabba” or the State-Festival of the State of Karnataka, called “Navaratri”, meaning Nine-Nights, a 10-day festival celebrated with utmost spectacle and joy in Mysore.

The Dasara festivities have a rich history of more than 400 years. During this 10-day festival, the usually calm and peaceful city transforms into a hub of celebrations and activities.

Mysore Dasara – Factual Information

• It is 414 years since Mysore started celebrating Dasara
•  The festival began in the 14th century

Mysore Palace

One of the major highlights of the Mysore Dasara every year is the celebrations in the Mysore Palace observed by the Royal family. Scion of the Mysore royal family, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, will perform the Dasara rituals.

This year, Mysore Dasara celebrations in the palace will begin on Sunday, 15th October, with the throne ascending. The puja rituals will be held between 10 AM and 2 PM.

Mahanavami and Ayudha puja rituals will be celebrated on 23rd October, Monday. These rituals will be performed at the Kalyana Mantapa of the palace.

On Tuesday, 24th October, Vijayadashami will be celebrated. One of the highlights of the Vijaya Dashami celebrations is Vajra Mushti Kalaga. It will be held at Karikallu Thotti in front of the Kalyana Mantapa of the palace.

The Golden Throne, assembled on 10th October, will be disassembled on 8th November, Thursday.

Dasara Torch Parade

The Dasara Torch Parade will be conducted on 24th October 2023.

Book Dasara

Of the events of Mysore Dasara 2023, Book Dasara is also one. Over 100 publishers across Karnataka will attend the Book Dasara at the University Oval Grounds.

Highlights of this Book Dasara is a selfie point where book lovers can take selfies with their favourite writers.

Dasara illumination 

One of the highlights of the Mysore Dasara 2023 is the city illumination. Over 130 kilometres of lighting, including theme-based illuminations including Chandrayana, Hampi, etc., will mesmerize all. The city’s Heritage structures will also be illuminated using specially made bulbs, taking you to a new world.

Visitors can enjoy viewing the illumination from the Ambaari double-decker bus, which will charge Rs 500 for the upper deck and Rs 250 for the lower deck. KSTDC operates the bus, which will run only in the evening.

The bus will start from the Mayura Hotel on JLB Road. They will cover the Old DC office, Crawford Hall, Oriental Central Library, Ramaswamy Circle, Sanskrit Pathashala, Palace South Gate, Jayamarthanda Circle gate, Hardinge Circle, KR Circle, Sayyaji Rao Road, Ayurvedic Medical College, and City Railway Station.

Railway museum illumination 

The South Western Railway has announced the famous Mysore Rail Museum on KRS Road, which would be illuminated till 8 pm during the Dasara festivities between October 15 and 24

Visitors can enjoy the view of the illuminated large outdoor exhibits of the rail museum, like the vintage steam locomotives, coaches, wagons, a toy train, a hand-operated crane, a rail bus and a steam fire pump.

The Jumbo Savari

The Jumbo Savari (Mysore Dasara Procession) is held on the streets of Mysore city on Vijayadashami. It starts from the Mysore Palace and culminates at a place called Bannimantap.

The main attraction of this procession is the idol of the Goddess Chamundeshwari, which is placed on a golden mantapa on the top of a decorated elephant. The royal couple and other guests worship this idol before it is taken around in the procession.

Colourful tableaux, dance groups, music bands, decorated elephants, horses, and camels form a part of the procession. After the Jamboo Savari, a torchlight parade occurs in the evening at the Bannimantap Parade Grounds.

Srirangapatna Dasara

The Mandya district administration will grandly celebrate the traditional Srirangapatna Dasara. The Mysore royal family matriarch Pramoda Devi Wadiyar will inaugurate the Dasara celebrations. It is a 3-day celebration commencing on 16th October.

Madikeri Dasara

Tourists who visit Mysuru can also visit the famous Madikeri Dasara. Dasha Mantapas (10 pendals) is the speciality of the Madikeri Dasara. Various cultural events will also be held during Dasara every evening.
