List Of Bank Holidays For 2020 In Karnataka

Here is a list of 2020 Bank holidays in Karnataka. Banks will remain closed on 2nd and fourth Saturdays of every month. This is the official list published by the Karnataka Government.

What Are The Transactions You Can Do On A Bank Holiday In Karnataka?

As one would imagine, banks are closed on a bank holiday. This means that any transaction that needs to be completed in the bank cannot be done on that day. This includes:

  • Making a cash deposit
  • Encashing a cheque
  • Making a demand draft
  • Opening or closing a bank account
  • Transferring money to another person through NEFT or RTGS
  • Collecting a cheque book
  • Collecting a debit card
  • Operating bank lockers

What Are The Transactions You Cannot Do On A Bank Holiday In Karnataka?

However, not all banking services are unavailable. You can still make transaction on the bank’s website and app. This includes

  • Opening a fixed deposit
  • Starting a recurring deposit
  • Making a request to stop cheque payment
  • Fund transfers to other accounts in the same bank

Your debit card can also be used to:

  • Withdraw cash from an ATM
  • Make online and offline purchases
  • Pay bills

If you lose your debit/credit card, you can make a request to block the card on the bank’s app or through its telebanking service.

There are also ways to transfer money on a bank holiday. These are:

  • Immediate Payment Service (IMPS)

This service can be used at any time of the day or night but there may be charges associated with it.

  • Unified Payment Interface (UPI)

UPI is also available 24×7 and has lower charges associated with it as compared to IMPR transactions.

  • Fund transfer through ATM.

Money can be transferred from one account to another at an ATM as long as both accounts are in the same bank.

How To Pay Bills During Public Holidays and Bank holidays In Karnataka?

In many cases, not paying a bill on time may result in a late fee and affect your credit. Thankfully, there are a number of ways to pay bills even on bank holidays. In the era of internet banking and bank apps, almost all bills can be paid online. Bills can also be paid via mobile wallets such as:

  • PayTM
  • PayUMoney
  • Oxigen
  • MobiKwik
  • Freecharge

These apps can be downloaded free of cost on android and iOS phones. You can then transfer money from your bank account to these wallets and use the money to pay bills online.

Water bills, electricity bills, BSNL bills, broadband and cable TV  bills and mobile bills can all be paid online at karnatakaone.gov.in. These online payments can be made at any time regardless of whether the bank is open or closed.

Bank Holidays In 2020 That Are only Applicable To Karnataka

Some bank holidays are applicable to banks across India while others are followed only in Karnataka or specific cities in Karnataka. For example, Karnataka Rajyotsava on November 1, is a bank holiday only in Bangalore.

Basava Jayanthi, Narak Chaturdashi , Balipadyami and Kanakadasa Janyanti are bank holidays applicable only to Karnataka.

Ugadi, Mahalaya, and Ayudha Puja are bank holidays only in Karnataka and a few other south Indian states.

Today, mobile wallets and money transfer apps have made it very easy to make payments and receive money even when banks are closed.

Sometimes ATMs can run out of cash when there are consecutive bank holidays. In such situations, mobile wallets can be very helpful. Some of the best mobile wallets available in Karnataka are:

  • PayUMoney
  • Oxigen

  • Freecharge
  • Vodafone M-Pesa
  • State Bank Buddy
  • JioMoney
  • Chillr
  • ICICI Pockets

Some websites like Jabong, Amazon, MakeMyTrip etc also have closed wallets. The money in these wallets can only be used to transact on that site.
