Karnataka Election Trivia – 2018 Assembly Election
- In the 2018 elections, BJP is contesting 224 seats, Congress is contesting 222 seats, JD(S) is contesting 201 seats and the All India Mahila Empowerment Party is contesting 174 seats.
- There are 224 constituencies in Karnataka
- Women voters outnumber men in 61 constituencies.
- 39 candidates are contesting the elections from the Mulbagal (SC) constituency in Southern Karnataka. This is the maximum number of candidates contesting the elections.
Largest and Smallest Constituencies
- With an electorate of more than 5.81 lakhs Karnataka’s largest Assembly constituency is Bangalore South
- Sringeri is the smallest constituency.
- The electorate of Bangalore south is three-and-a-half-times that of Sringeri.
- Challakere in Central Karnataka and Sedam in Hyderabad Karnataka only have 4 candidates.
The Richest, Oldest, and Candidate with the Highest Liability
- The Congress party is not contesting elections in 2 constituencies including Mulbagal.
- The Congress party has the three richest candidates in the 2018 elections.
- With declared assets of Rs 1020 crore, the sitting Govindarajnagar Congress MLA, Priya Krishna is the richest candidate.
- Priya Krishna also has the highest liability at the value of Rs 802 crore.
- The oldest candidate in the 2018 is Kagodu Thimmappa. He is 87 years old and contesting for the seat in 117 Sagar constituency on behalf of the Congress party.
Karnataka Election Trivia – 2013 Assembly Election
- The oldest candidate in the 2013 was Narsappa. He was 85 years old and contesting for the seat independently.
- In 2013, Balachandra Laxmanrao Jarkiholi from the BJP’s victory over Utagi Ramappa Kareppa from the Congress had a margin of 51.48%. This was the biggest percentage margin of the 2013 elections.
- In 2013, Congress candidate Prakash Babanna Hukkeri won 76,588 votes more than Basavanni Rudrappa Sangappagol of the BJP. This was the elections highest vote margin.
- In 2013, 23 candidates were 25 years old. This is the minimum age to contest for a seat in an Assembly election.
- The highest percentage of votes for a single seat in 2013 Karnataka elections was won by Prakash Babanna Hukkeri of the Congress party for the Chikkodi-Sadalga constituency. He won 68.44% of votes.
Karnataka Election Trivia – 2004 Assembly Election
- In 2004 three candidates were named Krishna Murthy.
- The closest contest was in 2004 when Krishna Murthy AR of JD(S) was defeated by Dhruvanarayana R of Congress by a single vote in the Santhemarahalli seat.
- In 2004, the Uttarahalli constituency had 6,90,363 voters making it the constituency with the largest number of voters in the history of Karnataka elections
Karnataka Election Trivia – 1985- 2008 Assembly Election
- In 1985, 49 women and 252 men contested for the Belgaum seat. This is the second largest number of candidates to stand for a single seat across India and the largest number of female candidates to stand for an Assembly seat.
- In 1989, the Congress party won 178 seats out of a total of 224 seats. This was its best performance.
- In 1994, the Congress party won only 34 seats making it the party’s worst performance.
- In 1999, BJP’s R Ashoka won 2,30,914 votes from the Uttarahalli constituency. This is the largest number of votes secured in any Karnataka Assembly election.
- In 2008, the BJP won 33.86% of votes and 110 seats while the Congress party won 34.76% of total votes but only 80 seats.
Winning Uncontested, Winning For Zero Votes
- A candidate has won a seat in the Karnataka Assembly uncontested 10 times till now. This includes 6 seats in 1957 and 2 seats in 1962 and in 1967 each.
- In 1957, Jamadanda Sarvesh in Sedam and Manjappa Ullal in Karkal won 0 votes.
Victories by Independent Candidates
- Independent candidates have won the Khanapur Assembly seat in Belgaum 8 out of 13 times. Congress has never won this seat while the BJP won it once in 2008 and the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti won in 1962.
- No party has been able to retain the seat from Heggadadevankote in Mysore for the past 12 elections since 1962.
- The Gurmitkal seat in Yadgir district was won by the Swatantra Party in 1962.
BJP, INC, and JD (S) – Noteworthy Facts
- Of the 12 times, elections were held in the Kolar Gold Fields seat, the JD(S) has never won a seat and 8 different parties have won the elections.
- Since 1994, the BJP has retained the Sullia (SC) seat in Dakshina Kannada district through the last 5 Assembly elections.
- Sullia was one of the first seats the BJP won in Karnataka in 1983.
- Since 1967, the Congress has retained the Gurmitkal seat in Yadgir district through the last 11 Assembly elections.
