Raman Research Institute (RRI) was founded in 1948 by the very renowned Indian physicist, Sir C.V. Raman, a Nobel Laureate. This was founded so that he could continue his personal research and studies after his retirement from the Indian Institute of Science. He continued his research in RRI until his demise in 1970. This institute was funded by CV Raman himself, with the help of his personal savings and private sources also donated funds.

A plot was gifted by the Government of Mysore to Sir CV Raman for the creation of this institute. This was in December 1934. In the same year, the Indian Academy of Sciences was also founded by him.

Several properties were donated by Prof. Raman to this academy for the benefit of the RRI. After Prof. Raman’s death in 1970, this academy created a public charitable trust called the Raman Research Institute Trust. The most important and significant function of this trust was to conduct and maintain the Research institute. This institute is now an autonomous body that is engaged in research in basic sciences.

Admissions

There are several programs available for training students who are interested in research. They are taken into the program only strictly according to their ability and merit.

  • Visiting Students

The Institute welcomes applications for regular long term research appointments such as Scientists, Associate Professors and Professors. There are several areas of research such as Astronomy and Astrophysics and its branches, Chemistry, Light and Matter Physics, Signal processing Imaging and Instrumentation, Soft Condensed Matter and Theoretical Physics.

The Who’s Who associated with Raman Research Institute

Several big names are associated with the RRI. Apart from Sir CV Raman, there are others like Prof. R Subhramaniyam, who is the present director, Mr. K Krishnamajaru who is the administrative Officer and there is a Deputy Administrative Officer as well.
