National Law School of India University is one of the sought after law colleges in Bangalore. The university was drawn up as a culmination of the syndicated efforts of the Bar Council of India, the Karnataka Bar Council, the Bangalore University, the Judiciary and the Government of Karnataka.
The university rose out of a need to have a center for legal research and education in India. Today the name “National Law School of India” is synonymous with unprecedented legal education and opportunities.
The Bangalore edition of the National Law School of India sits on twenty-three acres of lush green area. The campus is located in Nagarbhavi, adjacent to the Institute of Social and Economic Change. The campus evolved into an exclusively residential university with halls of residence for men, women and staff quarters.
Courses offered
The National Law School of India University offers comprehensive legal education including undergraduate, post-graduate, research degrees, distance education and endowment chairs.
The master’s degree is offered in two separate branches:
- The business laws branch and
- The Human rights laws branch

Distance Education Courses
Distance education programs at this law college in Bangalore empower candidates with a deep legal knowledge. With no age limits or a strict class schedule, graduates from any stream can apply for distance education programs. The courses offered are:
- One year post graduate diploma in cyber law and cyber forensics
- One year post graduate diploma in consumer law and practice
- One year post graduate diploma in child rights law
- One year post graduate diploma intellectual property rights law
- One year post graduate diploma in environmental law
- One year post graduate diploma in medical law and ethics

Admission and Eligibility
The Common Law Admission Test, popularly known as the CLAT is a national test for admission to the B.A., LL.B (Honors) program at the university. The admission is purely based on merit. Reservation of seats for backward classes is in accordance the applicable law in India.
Admission to the master’s program is similar to the bachelor degree admission. A Common Law Admission Test particularly for the master’s program determines the merit of the student.
The eligibility for admission is the student having passed the bachelor law degree from a recognized university with not less than 55% aggregate marks of the maximum marks.
Extra-curricular Activities
The National Law School of India has been a socially responsible and ethically aware institution from its inception. Members of faculty and students engage in numerous programs to further legal awareness among women and girls of the society.
There is a legal services clinic and a center for women and the law that offers legal advice to women and disadvantaged sections of society. Students and faculty help settle disputes while negotiating and mediating for people who do not have the wherewithal to fight for themselves.
Several workshops, events and competitions aligned with education, sports and cultural interests fill the gaps leading to a holistic education that is largely unparalleled.
Exchange Programs
The collaboration between the National Law School of India, the National University of Singapore, Osgoode Hall Law School, Buceuius Law School Germany and York University Canada, allows for students to study at universities outside the country for at least one trimester.
The exchange program facilitates exchange of ideas not only between law colleges but between cultures and modes of education and learning.
The exchange program also applies to members of the faculty. The exchange program for faculty members is facilitated via the Exchange and faculty improvement programs of the British Council in Chennai. Through the exchange program, members of faculty have the opportunity to teach and engage in research at the University of Wales, Nottingham and Warwick.
Eminent judges and professors from universities across the world have been involved in the process of education at the college. Guest lecturers from U.S.A., U.K., Canada, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, South Africa, Malaysia and New Zealand at various points have interacted and taught the students widening their perspectives beyond the boundaries of the college and even the country.
Research
The National School of India believes in research and enquiry. There are numerous ongoing research projects at the school. Some of the prominent research projects are funded by the Government of India, the Government of Karnataka, the UGC, the Women and Child Development, the UN agencies, HIVOS and the World Bank amidst numerous other reputed agencies. The faculty and students alike at the school have benefited from the research projects.
Infrastructural Facilities
Faculty members and students form a congregation of members of nearly every state in the country. Such diversity aids in developing an education system based on the differences of experience. Students develop better inter-personal and communication skills residing on campus.
Residential facilities for students and faculty members are immaculate. The campus boasts of separate hostel facilities for male and female students, staff quarters for teaching and support staff and hostel facilities for post graduate women students.
IT Infrastructure
A separate IT committee reviews, renews and maintains the IT infrastructure and services on campus. A wireless network system in classrooms, academic block, hostel, library and faculty blocks allow students and staff to remain updated and connected. A computer lab and computer and projector systems for every classroom enhance the student and teacher experience in manifold ways. A video conferencing facility allows the various campuses spread out across India to communicate and stay in touch.
Library Facility
The library in the Bangalore campus is dubbed as Sri Narayana Rao Memorial National Law Library as the library was built under the beneficent aegis of Mrs Sudha Murty of Infosys Foundation. A total built area of nearly 30,000 square feet affords the campus an unending supply of reading material (40,000 volumes) including but not limited to general and special subjects of study, textbooks, reference books, journals and reports pertaining to law education.
Links with other libraries in and around Bangalore allows students to have access to books outside of the campus. The library has access to many international online databases allowing students to access reports that are not limited to the state or even the country.
