Situated in a scenic area between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, Mangalore University located at Mangalagangotri provides the perfect ambiance for academic pursuits. This campus which began as a post graduate centre of Mysore University offering courses in just three departments became an independent university during 1980.

Today, Mangalore University is a well-equipped academic powerhouse with 25 post graduate departments and has 187 colleges affiliated to it. This premier university that has received a four star ranking from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), serves the higher education needs of students in the districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu in Karnataka.

What Does It Offer

Mangalore University conducts several courses for higher education in science, arts, management, law and commerce. This was the first university to offer undergraduate courses in yogic sciences, hotel management, fashion design and human resource development. Presently, the university has 19 endowment chairs for subjects such as literature, religion, fine arts, culture, Sanskrit literature, Yakshagana and languages besides yoga, banking, rural development and environmental studies.

The campus provides all the necessary academic facilities on-site of which the notable ones include the Microtron Centre, University Science Instrumentation Centre and the Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSEIP) besides a modern library and a cyber lab with internet connectivity at speeds up to 1 Gbps.

The campus of Mangalagangothri is a self-sufficient one with all amenities such as banking counters, guest houses and a shopping complex to cater to the requirements of students and faculty. Employees of the university are provided on-campus accommodation whereas students are housed in dedicated hostels.

Research and Grants

Mangalagangothri is fast gaining recognition for its studies on the environment in collaboration with well-known international and national institutions. The Ocean & Atmospheric Science and Technology Cell of Mangalore University are at the forefront of environmental research in the country.

The university has received financial aid of Rs. 8 crores to fund its research projects through grants from the Government of Karnataka, University Grants Commission, All India Council of Technical Education, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Ocean Development and Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources.

The Microtron Centre and the Ocean & Atmospheric Science and Technology Cell are at the centre of the current 29 ongoing research projects. Ongoing high level of research activity at this university is mirrored by the fact that Mangalore University ranks 24th for its publications in a list of the top 50 universities.

The university also conducts scholar-exchange programs with universities in Japan, Germany, Spain, Finland, UK and USA. Many faculty members have been able to pursue postdoctoral studies through such programs and have participated in research work assisted by the Rockfeller and Macarthur, Rotary, Commonwealth and Agatha Harrison Memorial fellowships.

The Who’s Who of Mangalore University

The Chancellor of Mangalore University is the Honorable Governor of Karnataka, Sri Hans Raj Bharadwaj and the Vice Chancellor is Prof. T. C. Shivashankara Murthy. Some of the notable faculty members of Mangalore University include Dr. K. Krishna Bhat who has a specialization in Yoga and Yoga therapy, Prof. Vishwanath who heads the Arts department and Prof. (Smt) Vinoda Rai K. who is the Dean of the Law department.

Through its ongoing research projects and academic liaison with reputed national and international institutions, Mangalore University is emerging as one of Karnataka’s foremost centers of learning.
